Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are the fashion equivalent to the mix CDs I used to push out in the late 90’s. You never know where they’ll take you next, and with broad tastes that often mishmash together in the same look, it’s that constant keep-you-guessing mentality that has me falling more in love with them each season. Rodarte’s Fall 2015 collection debuted at New York Fashion Week Tuesday and was deliciously eccentric. Let’s say, if Liza Minnelli were a cocktail dress…that dress would be in this collection. Funny, flirty a bit kooky…and yet undeniably lovable.
Let’s assess:
For Fall 2015, the Mulleavy gals ditched the mermaid motif of Rodarte’s Spring 2015 collection in favor of moodier blues and party dresses adorned with feathers that will having you dancing atop tables at Jay Gatsby’s house till dawn. We alternated between sequined stripes, brocade bodices and the occasional 3-dimensional flower. It was a collection rich with embellishments and a whole lot of sparkle! Honestly, what’s NOT to love?!
Take a closer look to better appreciate the madness:
It’s a risky strategy to vary between elements so much in the same look. Things could easily come off disjunctive, but somehow Rodarte manages to web together feathers, beading, and mixed prints to present a surprisingly cohesive collection. I think it’s official guys, Kate and Laura are masters of mixology! Their flirty concoctions are positively delightful and refresh the runway to be a place for experimentation. They keep rolling the dice and the wins keep on coming. Snaps for Rodarte!
