When you talk about high pressure jobs, Peter Copping no doubt has more weight on his shoulders than most. While the fashion world still mourns the loss of the legendary Oscar de la Renta at his namesake house, Copping stepped into the limelight Tuesday to unveil his first collection as Creative Director. Sure, the stakes are always high for a new creative director, but I dare say they can’t get much higher than Peter Copping following a man and a legacy as great as Oscar’s.
To the delight of the watchful eyes around the globe, Peter Copping rose to the occasion. He shared in an opening note before the collection on his intent to honor the great work of de la Renta himself, while opening the door to a new chapter. Mission accomplished!
And so it was with frenzy when New York Fashion Week turned its eyes to Peter Copping as he took firm grip of the reigns and ushered in Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2015 Collection, that garnered immediate RAVE reviews. Seriously, remember when Paper Magazine claimed Kim Kardashian broke the internet? Well, I wager that Copping did some damage to wifi everywhere. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook were instantly abuzz with excitement over the new era and Copping’s sweeping 55-look Fall collection that absolutely stole the show. I mean, seriously. It’s over guys. Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs…might as well pack it up because it’s all over now. De la Renta SLAYED the NYFW runway with a collection that is sure to become an instant classic.
Copping stayed with Oscar de la Renta’s signature aesthetic of poised, lady-like designs that toil with patterns, prints and a splash of color. Yet, while the bones of the house stayed very much intact, there were some notable subtle changes. The color palette was richer, silhouettes a touch more refined and the gold floral embroidery so popular with Oscar in his later collections was no where in sight. Still, the collection showed those perfectly tailored, classic silhouettes with a zest for life that we all know and love and isn’t that what matters most?

Peter Copping’s Fall 2015 debut was one knock out of a collection that came with GREAT promise for the future of Oscar de la Renta! It’s undoubtedly one of the strongest (if not the most) collections shown in New York this season, and was a landmine of options for major red carpet moments to come.
I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited to watch Copping grow into his role as creative director over time and make his own mark. New York’s most premiere fashion house as a new leading man, and he’s already on a roll.
