As we succumb to the shock that we’re at the end of February already, let’s sit back and relax to discuss the 10 Best Dressed of the 2016 Oscars red carpet!
When I sit back and think about the 2016 Academy Awards red carpet, there’s definitely a wide selection of designers and looks. No designer or trend really stood out to me, but instead – I saw a lot of variety, color and style. It was of course, a major red carpet event bringing longtime A-listers like Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore to the show. And then, it was also a night for the newcomer – Saoirse Ronan, Brie Larson and Alicia Vikander all looked beautiful and represented young Hollywood well.
On fashion, it was good. Not great, but good. There are two looks that really stand out in my mind, but as a whole I would say that the attendees really stepped it up! I did have a bit of a struggle selecting my ten favorites…but alas, I got it done.
And here they are! My 10 favorite looks from the 2016 Oscar red carpet!
Brie Larson in Gucci
Cheerful and delightful! The kind of dress I really want to go dancing in. Only problem is the hair, but she’s so fabulous that I’ll give that a pass.
Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
This is basically a sea foam version of the dress she collected the Oscar in a couple year’s back for Blue Jasmine, but it’s so strikingly beautiful I don’t even care. She’s like a breath of spring happiness! She makes me want to rush to the flower market and sweep up as many blooms as I can. Perfection.
Daisy Ridley in Chanel Couture
It’s a daring thing to wear a tea length dress on the red carpet, but Daisy Ridley does it so effortlessly well in Chanel Spring 2016 couture. Same as with Brie, I have objections to the hair styling…and I do think a better lipstick exists out there, but as far as fashion goes – I don’t think you can get better than this dress. It’s stunning. Lady Mary would be proud!
Isla Fisher in Salvatore Ferragamo
Two things: Isla Fisher is absolutely adorable and I’m willing to sign a petition for a Confessions of a Shopaholic sequel. You know, in case one exists out there. Ferragamo was an unexpected and wonderful twist on the red carpet and this is so light and irresistible.
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell
2016 is clearly the year of Lady Gaga! The blonde bombshell is hitting one home run after the next and bringing in fabulous designers to help her do it. For the Oscar’s, I expected she’d select Brandon Maxwell and the two really have out-done themselves with this ballgown over pants creation. It’s classic and she looks beautiful!
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
If anyone could pull off Armani Prive’s Fall 2015 couture collection, it’s Ms. Watts. Naomi was attending on the arm of Liev Schreiber, and oh what beautiful eye candy she was. Looking smooth, cool and glamorous – I dare say this might just be my very favorite of the night!
Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney
I quite like Olivia Munn. She’s pretty fashion savvy and is never one to shy away from a risk. Wearing orange with a coordinating lip seems a bit ‘out there’ to me, but she pulls it off so smashingly well that it makes me want to rush out and buy an orange gown for myself. In a world where people are always playing it safe, I appreciate her effort!
Priyanka Chopra in Zuhair Murad
The Oscars were on ABC which of course meant for some ‘product placement’, as in the placement of stars of some of ABC’s biggest shows. On that list, Priyanka Chopra of Quantico – which I haven’t seen but it does look like a fun knock-off of Homeland. This Zuhair Murad gown is perfect on her! And isn’t it fun to see an actress truly reveling in the moment? It seems mostly they try to act unfazed that they’re walking the Oscar red carpet, but Priyanka is having fun and it’s delightful!
Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein Collection
When Saoirse popped up on my television I nearly squealed! It feels so unusual to see her va-va voom it up, but this custom emerald CK gown is absolutely smashing on her. Soirse shared that she requested to wear green in honor of her homeland Ireland, but I think she should request to wear it more often simply because of how amazing she LOOKS in green! I feel like she stepped it up to another level. Great job!
Tina Fey in Atelier Versace
Tina Fey is really starting to learn how to work these red carpet events. She’s identified what works best for her and really works it. The richness of the purple, the exquisite fit and the ruching in all the right places are doing her serious favors. The hair seems a bit perplexing, but beyond that…she nailed it to a T!
It’s always bittersweet to share my Academy Awards best dressed list, because that means another award season has come to a close! Thank you so much to everyone who joined me on Twitter to live-tweet and laugh our way through it all. The ceremonies are always more fun when you can bounce commentary off of each other, over a glass of wine (or two).
Of course, I’m always interested to know who YOU think looked great (and not so great) on the red carpet. Tell me, who was your favorite of the night?
