It happened! The 2015 Academy Awards! You know, that rare night in Hollywood when actors give each other gold statues, wear couture gowns and drink a lot of champagne…while the rest of us sit at home judging them in our PJs. It’s an annual tradition we look forward to, and while sadly no one showed up dressed like a swan this year…we can celebrate that nearly everyone’s fashion game was on point!
Now that it’s all over, it’s time to get JUDGE-Y!
The red carpet was swimming with huge names in celebrity and fashion. From Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett, to Dior and Armani…it was a circus of fashion’s most elite vying their way onto best dressed lists around the globe. While there was a mass of great looks, there are ONLY 10 ladies making it onto my Best Dressed List. It’s a cut-throat business everyone, but I thought long and hard about just who would be awarded a covetable spot. It’s simply a fact of life that we can’t all be winners, nor can we all be best dressed. You have to draw the line somewhere!
So, here we go…I’m drawing the line. My picks for 10 Best Dressed Ladies at the 2015 Academy Awards!
Behati Prinsloo in Armani Prive Couture
In case you’re unaware, Behati Prinsloo is the lucky lady to be married to Adam Levine. Adam was a performer at last night’s Academy Awards, and Behati played the doting, loving wife in this GORGEOUS Fall 2014 couture Armani Prive. Many were hoping for an Armani couture moment on the red carpet, and leave it to a Victoria’s Secret model to make it so frickin’ fabulous!
Cate Blanchett in Maison Margiela Couture
Favorite fashion moment of the night? Without a doubt, Cate Blanchett wearing one of John Galliano’s debut gowns for Maison Margiela. Given Galliano’s past and much buzzed about return to fashion, it was a HUGE feat to see one of his gowns grace the Oscar red carpet. Who better to wear such a piece than the timeless Cate Blanchett? Surely, lots will be said about Cate and her statement necklace, but to me…the ultimate statement here is about grace and acceptance, not a necklace. Long live my Queen Cate!
Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent
I was beyond excited to see Dakota Johnson show up in color last night! Even better, it was a rare red number for Saint Laurent. She gets my vote for most improved of the night!
Emma Stone in Elie Saab Couture
Everyone’s favorite ray of sunshine, Emma Stone, dazzled in this canary yellow Elie Saab gown. After an array of black looks, she felt due for a splash of color and oh what a vision she was! There’s just something about a redhead in yellow. It’s unexpectedly chic. Keep on keeping on, Emma!
Jennifer Hudson in Romona Keveza
Yellow made another radiant appearance on Jennifer Hudson in Romona Kevezas! J. Hudson seems to love her black and white looks, making this column gown an unexpected surprise. Jennifer looked refreshed and glowing!
Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein Collection
It will come as no surprise to anyone that Lupita Nyong’o showed up looking pristine and perfect. What was a touch surprising was her custom Calvin Klein, that was dripping in pearls. It was at last year’s Critic’s Choice Awards that Lupita wore another crisp white CK number that stole our hearts, and seeing her return to those roots was fantastic! The Golden Globes and SAG awards this year brought us a flashy, touch over-the-top Lupita…making this streamlined winter white a real standout!
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive Couture
Naomi Watts seems to be a permanent fixture on my Best Dressed Lists, but I just can’t help it! Her Armani Prive couture was cool and laid back, in that way you never thought couture could be laid back. Her effortless approach to red carpet styling continues to steal the show.
Reese Witherspoon in Tom Ford
Reese Witherspoon may not have won any awards this season, but she sure as heck showed up looking fantastic to each event. Some may say she’s been ‘safe’ this season, but I say she’s been smart. She knows what works for her, and she wears it. There’s not a whole lot of debate there, and it’s WORKING! Done!
Rita Ora in Marchesa
Rita Ora was upstaged in her performance last night by seriously obnoxious lighting. Thus, it helps to remember she did have a major red carpet moment before being drowned out by laser beams. Marchesa often misses the mark for me, but this is spot on fabulous.
Rosamund Pike in Givenchy Couture
The clear winner of the red carpet last night, at least for me, was everyone’s favorite Gone Girl: Rosamund Pike. It’s been a lackluster showing for her this season, but girlfriend really brought the big guns for the Oscar’s. Good for you Gone Girl! Good for you!!
In case you missed it, (and want to judge some more) I have also put together a Worst Dressed List (here) of the night. Those are the ladies who missed the mark and showed up looking a bit kooky…albeit, some WAY more kookier than others.
It’s sad to kiss another award season goodbye! I’ve enjoyed tweeting with you guys and putting together these red carpet posts. Let me know if you’d like to continue to see red carpet fashion because Hollywood is always celebrating each other, and there are several other ways for us to adorn our red carpet JUDGING hats.
As always, let me know what you thought of last night’s red carpet. Have a great week!
