Nicholas K‘s brother/sister duo Christopher and Nicholas Kunz have a passion for flying. Their Fall 2015 Collection was a tribute to aviation (here), and for Spring 2016 – they stormed the runways of New York Fashion Week featuring parachutes and zip lines with a collection inspired by free falling.
One aesthetic I admire about Nicholas K every season, is their dedication to handmade materials. From distressed vintage leather to tip-dyed denim and satin fabrics, the collection has a worn-in look and feel. I also admire their strong female archetype we see each season. I don’t want to use the word masculine though, as I think it sexist to describe hard-edged clothing with a real purpose as a male thing. If anything, Nicholas K makes a strong argument that a female can be a warrior and pillar of strength, same as her male counterparts.
Nicholas K’s Spring 2016 collection features a sleek fierceness, that would virtually weather even the harshest of storms. One fun and awe-inspiring element of the collection is the use of over-sized and dramatic hoods. They have such a strong effect on framing the model as a pillar of strength and models wore armed shields and literal badges of armor.
I did love the collection on the actual runway, but Nicholas K’s PR team provided me with these incredible backstage shots that really present the clothes well. It’s great to see the collection live in its element, beyond strutting the catwalk of NYFW.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t showcase the runway show itself for my lovely dreamers. It does, after all – sort of blow me away! The runway show opened with a sea of white parachutes and ropes, then welcomed rusted oranges, black and even denim blue.
For makeup, the complexion was glowing with minimal blush/bronzer, and a very smoked out black eye liner.
I give the collection a solid A, what about you?
