In the heart of Chelsea, Georgine ushered 90’s grunge back on the scene at New York Fashion Week with a Spring/Summer 2017 collection fit for Courtney Love.
When I think back on my “musical upbringing”, there’s no doubt – as a child of the 90’s – I had my grunge days. In addition to Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam…Courtney Love was always a favorite of mine. Courtney made a name for herself and a strong existence in a man’s world. She did what she wanted, without apology — at a time when it just wasn’t seen for women to be doing so. In many ways, you could say dear Courtney was beyond her years and when Georgine‘s Spring/Summer 2017 runway show opened with everyone’s favorite blonde female rockstar crooning from the speakers, I knew things were off to a terrific start.
For the Spring collection, designer Georgine Ratelband drew inspiration from the type of girl that balances her closet with items from Bergdorf Goodman and Trash & Vaudeville. Captivated by the idea of mixing luxury with Rock t-shirts and intricate beading with motorcycle jackets, her 90’s grunge-glam look came to life.
In the show notes, Georgine also dedicated the collection to her mother by expressing a deep love and gratitude…as well as a reminiscing on a strong interest in rummaging through her closet. That idea of borrowing pieces from your mother to create a look all of your own reminded Georgine of rock-star heiresses like Frances Bean Cobain and Zoe Kravitz, who are both able to borrow from their parent’s iconic closets to define a modern personal style for the young millennial.
I honestly had so much fun at Georgine’s Spring/Summer 2017 runway show in New York that I scarcely wanted to leave! The collection brought back a forgotten nostalgia for the 90’s grunge days. The baby doll dresses and metallics paired perfectly with the gorgeous overcoats and definitely bring to life the image of a young girl strutting around the city in her mother’s coat, on her way to a party with her friends. Suddenly I want to make better use of my vintage t-shirt collection and dust off my old Nirvana and Hole albums.
Thank you to Georgine for inviting me to this exciting show and for sharing with Dream in Lace these stunning runway images!
