Putting the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter Foundation to the test! Is it a new go-to favorite?
In the age of Instagram, it should come as absolutely no surprise that this purchase was 100% inspired by the Instagram explore page.
While I’m usually referred to infinite videos of adorable animals doing adorable things…occasionally a few beauty posts slip on through. And to be honest, I don’t mind. Sure, there are many reasons we could all gripe about Instagram but if it introduces you to a foundation with a beautiful coverage that’s also certified cruelty-free and vegan…I Stan the gram!
The Huda Beauty Faux-Filter Foundation
While I’d heard the name Huda Beauty thrown about quite often, what drew me into this foundation on Instagram was it’s flawless finish. It appeared to really give your complexion a faux-filter filter look that I knew would be perfect for events or long days when you just don’t have time to touch up your makeup…but need to look pulled together at the same time.
After a little hunting around, I learned that Huda Beauty isn’t available at Nordstrom (bummer) but is at Sephora. So I quickly placed my order and sat back waiting to be blown away. Now that I’ve had the chance to review and test the foundation out for myself I’m excited to share a FULL REPORT on how the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation performed for me and whether or not it lived up to my expectations.

Keep reading because below I walk you step-by-step through all the details! If there’s anything at all that comes to mind for you that I don’t touch on, please ask! I’m an open book and will answer any question as quickly as a I can. xo
The Coverage: Full
It feels kind of rare for a true full-coverage foundation to hit the market, so I’m going to shout from the rooftops that the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation is in fact a full coverage foundation! As such, I do think it’s a bit heavy for everyday use but if you have an event coming up? This might just be the perfect foundation for you! Struggling through a bad breakout? This could also be the perfect foundation for you!
The Finish: Matte
When worn, the foundation delivers a really beautiful natural matte finish. It’s also not a “flat” matte, meaning it has some dimension to it and a radiant undertone. Given that it was the beautiful finish that sucked me into buying this foundation off Instagram in the first place, I was beyond thrilled to see it wear the way I wanted to on my own skin. It’s really quite beautiful and won’t turn you into a cake-face like other full-coverage foundations have a tendency to do. We all know how cringey that can be!
Light-Weight, Liquid to Powder Formula
Having seen (and read) that the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation is full-coverage and matte, I was a little surprised how light the formula itself is when applying. What I found, though, is that this is a foundation that “sets” on your skin. To apply, I add some to the back of my hand and use a buffing brush to smooth over my skin. Within about two to three minutes, you’ll notice that the liquid foundation sets in place as a powder.
Shade Range: 30 Shades (Oxidizes)
The Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation is available in thirty shades with a variety of undertones. If you’re looking for a super dark shade, I do think the color selection at that end of the spectrum is pretty limited. Sadly!
Word of caution when picking your perfect shade? The Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation does oxidize. To me, this is definitely not a negative but always something to be aware of when selecting your shade.
Since I was shopping online, I used the Sephora Shade Finder to determine my exact shade. All you have to do is plug in a foundation shade you’ve already been color-matched to and the computer will push out the best shade for you. When applying I got a tad nervous at first that it was too light for me, but ultimately the Sephora shade finder was correct as the foundation darkened a bit once applied.
Long-Lasting Formula that Fights Off Oil and Sweat
In general, I really enjoy all liquid to powder foundations. They’ve always done a great job at control any oil or sweat that springs up on my face throughout the day and I’m happy to say the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation lived up to this expectation. If you’re looking for a LONG wearing foundation, I think you will be mighty impressed!
I’ve been wearing this foundation for around 12 hours at a time and notice it has great lasting power. If you have oily skin, I think you’re going to absolutely fall in love with how well it control any oil that develops throughout the day.
Scented
One drawback I have to mention is that the foundation is scented. I noticed the fragrance immediately when applying and was definitely turned off by it. Fortunately, though, the smell does go away pretty quickly. It’s just one of those things I don’t understand was added in the first place…
Why oh why do brands need to add scents to foundation? That’s so unnecessary!!
My Experience
Like with any foundation I review here on Dream in Lace, I experimented in using the Faux-Filter foundation both with and without a primer over a couple weeks. After all, I always like to get to know a product really well before sharing my thoughts.
What I found was that a primer didn’t really make a difference. In the ingredients you’ll find Dimethicone, which is great for blurring over fine lines and pores. As such, the foundation performs equally as well with or without a primer. So, if you’re all for skipping an extra step in your beauty routine – I vote you’re safe to do so!
As I tested this out day after day, I found that the Huda Beauty Faux-Filter foundation is in fact too heavy for everyday use. By the end of the third day, my skin felt like it was on the brink of a breakout so I did a face mask and took a few days off before continuing to test. It’s kind of funny in that this is something I remember happening when I discovered MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid foundation years ago. That remains one of my favorite foundations of all time, but like this is just too much for my skin to handle on a daily basis.
That said, I have to say I am truly in love with this foundation! I am head over heals with the way it makes my skin look and how long-wearing it truly is. As the name suggests, the foundation really does give you a faux-filter look that’s really beautiful.

Overall Grade? A
At the risk of sounding like a crazy person, I have to say: I LOVE THIS FOUNDATION.
The Faux-Filter foundation actually not only met my expectations but managed to exceed them with just how fuss-free it truly is. Once you apply the foundation and it sets, you can totally forget about it for 12+ hours. It’s also seriously going to be battling it out with MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid as my go-to foundation for events…something I have to think of quite a bit.
The one thing that kept me from giving this foundation a solid A+ is the scent. It just bothers me that Huda Beauty bothered including that and I hope it’s something that might be phased out down the road. Otherwise, it really is a fantastic foundation. It’s also one I highly trust and recommend. Great stuff!
Thank you so much for reading! I purchased this foundation with my own cash and all thoughts/opinions are 100% my own. If you’ve tried Huda Beauty’s Faux-Filter foundation, I’d really love to hear what your experience with it has been like. Lemme know!
