Get fashionable, career advice aplenty in The Career Code, by Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power of Who What Wear. They share dos, don’ts and the inside truth on building a fast-track, self-made career!
I love a good power book, don’t you?
Well, Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power of the the internet sensation Who What Wear certainly deliver with their latest book: The Career Code. “Must-know rules for a strategic, stylish and self-made career.” When I first saw this spring up on my Instagram feed, I instantly knew I would devour it. Sure enough, I picked up the eBook from Amazon and whizzed through this in one sitting. Yup. You read that correct, one sitting.
I know you’re probably thinking I must be some kind of major book worm, but it took me a year to get me through Divergent. If that tells you anything. But the cut-to-the-chase approach Kerr and Power take in The Career Code as they lay out 17 codes to building a strong, self-made career is infectious. They talk the way I talk and waste no time beating around the bush. As wonderful as artfully written prose or charming little backstories can be, I honestly don’t have the time or attention span to sit through that these days so I really appreciate the lack of filler content and focus on delivering clear, concise information that’s as practical as it is beneficial.
More than just a quick read, The Career Code also happens to deliver some really sharp advice. Where #GirlBoss and Leave Your Mark have come before, there are some overlapping bits of advice – but in The Career Code, Kerr and Power take things further by cultivating a code to benefit careers across a spectrum of industries. Yes, they give excellent to-the-point examples on editorial positions in fashion communication…as well as sections discussing how to make a sharp resume with modern resume templates and even discussions on careers in law and finance. Building an impressive resume is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to making it in the world of work, no matter which industry you want to work in. You can find some inspiration here if you’re not sure what kind of layout you should go for, and The Career Code gives some brilliant guidelines on what to write.
Working hard, smart and with a lot of hustle is definitely important in any field. As is being able to quantify your worth, think ahead of the curve and keep pushing to the next level. Of course I already was aware of that, but The Career Code came in delivering sharp advice that had me taking more than a few screenshots for future reference. Like Hillary and Katherine were their own little Oprah’s delivering ‘aha’ moments like candy on Halloween. The book is tasty food for thought. From building and tracking goals, to productivity hacks to help you up your game…each tidbit of advice they give is something you can directly apply to yourself, immediately.
You know it’s a good book when you can’t wait to finish it and get started on the To-Do list you’ve been growing as you read.
Bonus? Hacks!
As if 17 career codes weren’t enough, Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power share a bonus 27 life hacks that are pretty genius. From knowing how to get dressed and out the door in under 10 minutes to managing your inbox, they’re quick bits of advice that are truly helpful. My favorite is their recommendation to schedule a day each week to focus on long-term goals, to keep yourself moving on the right path and not just zeroed-in on getting short-term projects off your plate. I’m all about seeing the big picture and actually blocking regular time each week to do so is so simple…I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before.
If you can’t tell, I absolutely loved The Career Code and absolutely recommend picking it up. Whether you’re looking for tips on how to build your resume and prepare for your next job…or how to kick-butt and be the most productive in your current one. It’s a fast-paced and informative read that’s great for working girls everywhere, in all industries.
Hope you like it and if you do give it a read, let me know what you think!
