We’re officially at the height of spring! With the warmer temperatures and fragrant blooms aplenty, it’s time to direct our attention to spring fashion trends that are really worth it this season.
Time Out: It’s April 1, already? Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year and swearing up and down that 2016 was going to really be OUR year. (Which, by the way, it very well still could be! Right?)
As shocking as it is that we are in the month of April, there’s no doubt that the spring season brings excitement. I don’t know about you, but at the first glimpse of light past 6 o’clock, I was ready to start stowing away my winter sweaters and break out color, lighter fabrics and prints! For spring 2016, I’m saying goodbye to my preppy-chic days of winter and embracing a more cool downtown style that’s a sleek mix of contemporary athleticism.
On the Spring 2016 runways, there were loads of really impressive collections to be seen – but one of my top favorites was Derek Lam. I’m really feeling the Derek Lam vibes right now and love the way these clothes are perfect for your everyday work attire as well as a cool night out on the town. I love the ongoing polish of the sharp lines and crisp colors and feel like a new brand of ‘classic’ is emerging on the scene.
Before hitting the mall to restock your closet, let’s discuss 8 spring fashion looks of the moment and just which ones are really slaying it. (Laced-up detailing? Score.)
1. Color Blocking
First, let’s appreciate the combination of green, white and black shall we? I think that’s a winning trio that deserves a bit more praise. Color blocking is without question, one of the most effective ways to make a statement. Do some color blocking on a tank that echos the popular sportswear trend? You’ve found the golden ticket!
2. Bold Colors on the Bottom
When it comes to going bold, I think a look has a lot of balance when the vibrant colors are worn on the bottom and evened out with a more basic top. That means, bold pops of color on your skirts, pants and shorts are a definitely do for the spring 2016 season and well into summer. It’s a sophisticated and cool way to bring some edge to your outfit, while looking totally put together.
3. Peach and Coral Me Happy!
As I do most years, I’m very on board with peach tones for the spring season. Even better? When they’re paired with crisp white. It’s a fresh palette that brings that light easy, breezy attitude we love about spring…while adding in a little pop.
4. Sheer Paneling
Be it in your blouse, your skirt or your pants – there’s no doubt that sheer paneling is definitely having its moment right now in fashion. With good cause, I say, as it’s an elegant and innovative way to take classic, signature pieces and reinvent them in a contemporary style.
5. Black and White
It seems it just isn’t spring anymore without a monochrome, black and white outfit. This spring, Derek Lam offers several great options but my favorite is the use of basic black and white stripes in lace. It romanticizes an otherwise contemporary look and seems perfect for a wedding or to gallivant around town in a floppy hat and sandals.
6. Printed Shorts
It’s 2016 and shorts aren’t just shorts anymore, they’re a statement. Bold prints, colors and textures take our short-game to a whole new level. Whether you’re heading to a music festival or spending an afternoon shopping with your friends, show off your tanned and toned legs in playful and energetic prints. It’s like shorts are the new skirts, guys.
7. Ultra Mod, Retro Sunglasses
Of course, it wouldn’t be spring or summertime without a killer pair of sunglasses and in 2016, I’m ditching my aviators in favor of rimmed retro shades like these from Derek Lam.
8. Lace Me Up Detailing
Ever since Tommy Hilfiger walked his laced-up Fall 2015 collection down the runway last February, I’ve been having a fling with lace-up detailing. It’s a sporty and unexpected twist that spices I’m seasonal basics.
