In perhaps the biggest surprise of the season, Vera Wang stole the show at Day 6 of New York Fashion Week…and she had some steep competition. The Rodarte sisters continued to dominate the runways, Peter Copping rose to the occasion again with stunning creations for Oscar de la Renta and Tory Burch did her ‘thang’. Biggest surprise of the day, though? None other than the girl whose name we’re so accustom to hearing, we sometimes forget it: Miss Vera Wang.
For Spring 2016, Vera Wang continued her exploration with a black palette – bringing in a few supporting stars like crisp, vibrant white and red. It was a color palette that’s cool and cutting edge, with eloquent detailing that’s quite remarkable for a ready-to-wear collection. As always, Wang played to her strengths — a cunning silhouette with beautiful embellishments. Be it over-sized sequins in a shift dressed, a crystalized bodice or soft, feathered skirt, Wang played a strong game.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the tall, black platforms that stampeded down the runway. Be it a black bootie, or clogs – the footwear was sturdy and edgy, perfect for climbing the urban jungle of New York.
Vera Wang’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection was sexy, sporty and…surprising. I’ll be honest, when drafting my must-see shows of New York Fashion Week this round, Wang did not make the list. Not that I don’t love and respect her long-history of excellence at NYFW, but with the presence of such great rising talent in New York right now — that status-quo didn’t get the blood boiling, so-to-speak. Enter a red razor back dress and I’m singing a different two. Bring some glitz and sparkle with sharply tailored lines, and I’m over the moon.
A big thank you to Vera Wang for reminding us of her worthy legacy and making Spring 2016 all that much more sleek!
