The term “self-care” is one I used to find innately annoying.
It would routinely spring up in magazines like O or Shape — and for some reason this vision of people singing Kumbaya beside burning incense appeared in my mind. Overtime I’ve realized I was wrong, though.
Self-care actually means doing something for yourself and by yourself. It’s really that simple and there’s no need to start burning incense to get the job done! Working out at the gym, dancing your heart out to Lady Gaga, watching (again) episodes of your favorite television show or simply indulging in a glass of your wine after a long day. These are just some of the countless ways you can practice self-care in your daily life.
There truly is no rule book on how you honor yourself – the important thing is that you do!
Favorite Self-Care Products
Considering we’re all living in what seems like a constantly hectic state of mind, I’m opening up my beauty closet to share some of my most favorite self-care products with you in hopes they might help give you some piece of mind.
Sometimes I turn self-care into a grand affair, using everything in one night. Most of the time, though? I use these products here and there throughout the week whenever I can carve in a few minutes.
A full night of pampering yourself is a glorious thing – but it doesn’t always work with your schedule. Other days you may only have five minutes to spare and that’s okay! The key is to take moments when you find them to show yourself a little love and appreciation. (Okay. Kumbaya. I feel like I’m starting to sound like a self-help article in O Magazine. Forgive me!)
However or whenever you find time to use them, these favorite self-care products definitely have one thing in common! They deliver soothing effect that will help you unwind at the end of a long day. They also happen to smell pretty nice, too, as an added bonus.
Dr. Teal’s Eucalyptus and Spearmint Epsom Salts (Shop)
Considering that a relaxing bath is one of the most beloved forms of self love, let’s kick off this list of favorite self-care products with some Dr. Teal’s. Before finding these bath salts, I honestly thought the whole Epsom salts can soothe aching muscles thing was a myth. Then, the Relax and Relief bath salts came into my life and there was no turning back.
Add these to piping hot bat water and soak for twenty minutes. In doing so, you’ll actually feel the tension and aches releasing from your muscles. It’s a bit of a phenomenon really!
Dr. Teal’s Eucalyptus & Spearmint Bubble Bath (Shop)
Alongside the bath salts? I’m also a big fan of the accompanying bubble bath from Dr. Teal’s. The fragrance is strong enough that you can even use this without the Epsom salts for a similar effect. In addition to creating aromatic bubbles in your bath, the product also lathers nicely and can double as a shower gel.
O’Keefe’s Healthy Feet Night Treatment (Shop)
I discovered the Healthy Feet Night Treatment from O’Keefe’s while browsing the aisles of Target towards. Considering I’m on my 10th tube now, it’s obviously among my favorite self-care products. The treatment is also a particularly great discovery considering if you’re planning an at-home pedicure session.
The product as a thick, gel-like consistency that is apparently loaded with superpowers! I apply at bedtime, throw on some soaks and wake up to completely transformed and softened feet in the morning. Skin is silky smooth like I just dropped $60 for a pedicure when I really just dropped $6.99 on some lotion. Bargain!
Aveda Stress-Fix Composition Oil (Shop)
If you ask me, Aveda products earn A+ marks across the board for their fragrance and the Stress-Fix Composition Oil is no exception. With a blend of lavender, lavandin and sage, this also has an innately calming effect. The oil can be used in your bath or as a massage oil for the body and scalp. I prefer massaging this into my temples as well as adding a couple drops to the base of my nose.
Woodhouse Day Spa Serene Bath Oil
While the Woodhouse Spa’s Serene Oil isn’t available online for purchase, there are a growing number of spas throughout the US. With that in mind, I simply couldn’t leave it off my list of favorite self-care products because it is truly my FAVORITE stress-relieving oil. It has a deep scent to it that manages to pierce through any tension lingering in my mind.
Yes, it’s great in the bath but I prefer using this the way Woodhouse does in their massage services. Add a few drops to your hands, rub together slightly, then cup your hands over your mouth and nose. While taking deep breaths, stress and anxiety drift away.
Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge Mask (Shop)
Want to know what true heaven is? Twenty minutes in a Dr. Teal’s Eucalyptus and Spearmint bath with the Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge Mask on your face. Its fabulous minty coolness sooths away any stress your holding in your facial features while deep cleaning your pores. My skin is always noticeably smoother immediately after use and the next day? I’m guaranteed to have a perfect skin day.
Biossance Squalane Renewal Mask (Shop)
Where the Ole Henriksen mask has a cooling effect, Biossance’s Squalane mask feels like a warm hug to the skin. It can be applied and worn for a full 15 minutes (my preferred method) OR for 5 minutes if your skin is in need of a quick boost.
What I particularly love about this mask is its way of rebalancing my skin. Whenever my skin feels irritated or in a funk, I whip this out and everything calms down. Definitely getting another while I can — but also keeping my eyes out for a great alternative.
CND Cuticle Eraser (Shop)
Another one of my favorite self-care products is this cuticle cream from Ulta! It moisturizes and nourishes the sensitive skin around your nails, while not being greasy like many other cuticle creams I’ve tried. This is another product I like applying before bed, massaging gently into finger tips and cuticles for noticeable improvement come morning.
Deep Sleep Pillow Spray (Shop)
Last but not least: the biggest game-changer on this list! When I first came across this award-winning Deep Sleep Pillow Spray and its rave reviews, I was intrigued but skeptic. Like many out there, I’m a tortured sleeper and the thought that a simple pillow spray would cure my most stubborn of woes seemed a bit too good to be true. At $29 a bottle, it also seemed like a bit of a pricy gimmick to me but I was desperate enough to take the plunge.
Well, sure enough — all the rave reviews were right! This stuff truly is a miracle in a bottle. I’ll spray the mist on my pillow as well as on my neckline, take a few deep breaths and somehow I’m out. Its blend of lavender, chamomile and vetivert works actual wonders! Not only does it help me fall asleep more easily, I also sleep through the full night – another big struggle point for me.
Basically, this pillow spray has improved my bedtime struggles by 100%.
