Embracing the cold! Celebrating snow day style with winter plaid and a chat about my favorite winter weather activities.
It’s hard for me to imagine now, but there was in fact a long time where I loathed snow.
Perhaps it’s the change in climate, making fleeting snow days few and far between…but blankets of white snow now bring me joy. Through college, I remember actually loathing the stuff. Nothing could send me into a sour mood quite like news of snow in the forecast. I dreaded the tedious tasks of scraping my windshield, digging out after a blizzard…navigating crazed shoppers at the grocery store as they stocked up for an encroaching white death that would seemingly prevent them from leaving home for month.
Today? I’m singing a different tune. I’ve come to really enjoy the white stuff. Honest!
Breaking Into Snow Day Style
Of course with snow, comes snow day style and to me? There’s nothing more important than being comfortable. I’ll skip over confining denim in favor of soft knits and layering up is key!
Take this look for example, a cuddle dud layered beneath a turtleneck layered beneath a blouse layered beneath a vest. On snow day style, I vote for wearing as many layers as you can get away with. Truly.
Winter Style with Tobi
If your eye is drawn to my red and black winter plaid blouse, you might be surprised to know it comes from LA based retailer Tobi. But when it comes to layering up, I think it works beautifully for pulling together some snow day style, don’t you?
Black and red partner together as a classic power duo that really pops against a snowy backdrop. Top that off with a cozy puffy vest, a red lip and the cutest gosh darn hat (handmade by my sister!!) – and you’re all set to go walking in a winter wonderland.
My favorite part of this plaid blouse are the sleeves. Obviously. Some may say that the bell sleeve trend is getting over done but not for this girl. I say bring it on! They add dimension and movement to your outfit that traditional sleeves just don’t offer…with the added bonus of being even more fun to wear. Honestly. I’m sold!
Tobi in general has TONS of affordable styles that are perfect for your personalizing your snow day style. Their sweater collection in particular is pretty outstanding! Definitely visit the Tobi website to check everything out.
You remember when you were a kid and you just couldn’t wait to break out the sled on snow days? Or, go running into the backyard to make snow angels.
Childhood snow days are no doubt, very magical – but as an adult – they definitely have their advantages as well.
What are MY favorite snow day activities?
Obviously lounging around in pajama bottoms with a piping hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate is near the top of my list. I also do really enjoy getting out in the snow for a walk, to take in the beauty of it all and enjoy the insulated silence and peacefulness that a snowfall can bring. I usually buy boots for hiking and hunting so they protect my feet whilst I’m out hiking in the snow.
On snow days, I also love to hit the kitchen and whip of a pot of fresh soup – finished off with a big chunk of bread, of course. When it comes to soup, I’m pretty easy to please (as long as its vegan) and have a lot of fun experimenting with vegetable soups, lentils, butternut squash soup and even – broccoli cheddar. Basically, I’m a soup nut and a snow day only brings that out even more. Like layers, I vote the more soup the merrier!!
Of course, we all know snow days also are great for bundling up inside to watch movies or catch up on Netflix. The last two weeks have been super cold and snowy around the Midwest, making for the perfect time to reinstate my Hulu account. I plowed through season 2 of The Path (largely underrated) and am currently finishing off The Handmaid’s Tale (which is everything I hoped, and more).
In the wintry weeks ahead, I’ve also got my eyes set on season 2 of The Crown and the German series Dark on Netflix.
Well dreamers, to help you pull together your very own snow day style – I’ve rounded up a selection of wintry pieces that are perfect for layering and embracing the winter wonderland outside!
While I’m not a reader of the Farmer’s Almanac (imagine that), I guess it is predicted to be a cold and snowy winter. Meaning, our winter closets are going to be well stocked. Bundle up!!
