Toasting the start of our first virtual New York Fashion Week experience together!
On February 12, 2020, New York Fashion Week wrapped its Fall 2020 season in the Big Apple.
It was a season much like any other, with an overflowing calendar of in-person runway shows packed to the gills and after-parties that stretched well past midnight in the city that so famously never sleeps. Following NYFW, “fashion month” traveled overseas to Europe with all eyes on London, followed by Milan and Paris.
Then, the world changed and since nothing’s been the same.
I remember in the later days of Milan Fashion Week, you’d hear talk of COVID-19 but it was still quite hush, hush. It was Giorgio Armani in Milan who first pulled the plug on in-person events. He showed his Fall/Winter 2021 collection in a runway show with no one present but the models and cameramen. At the time, I remember sitting watching that show over coffee thinking it was so bizarre. Now, over seven months later it’s the norm and it would be a traditional runway show event that felt out of place.
Onto Virtual New York Fashion Week
Before diving into specific shows and collections of our first virtual New York Fashion Week experience, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this occasion and rather historic fashion week event.
If there’s one thing that 2020 has taught us as a whole, it’s that everything can change and everything can change fast. Another thing 2020 has taught us? That we’re all capable of adapting. That life can go on in ways we never thought it could.
And that’s what fashion month means this season. The weeks ahead will be a culmination of how art has responded. How the global pandemic has prompted everyone in the fashion industry to pivot and find a “new” way of doing what they’ve been doing all along. For many years now, we’ve watched the fashion calendar churn around and around again, all sensing that perhaps something needed to change. Perhaps the old way of existing was becoming archaic and we needed to hit the reset button, to find a updated routine that works in this new modern era we found ourselves in.
Well, here we are! Our first virtual New York Fashion Week with digital events scheduled to continue in London, Milan and Paris. The new day in fashion has arrived and it comes at a time when I think we’re all most hungry for art to live and thrive again.
SO! Here’s to the beginning of a successful virtual New York Fashion Week and all the wonderful collections we’ll be enjoying together over the weeks ahead. I for one can’t wait to see what designers have in store for the Spring/Summer 2021 season and look forward to discussing it all with you!
