Bust out your bell bottoms, the 70’s are back! For Fall 2015 fashion, the 70’s and Boho chic are all the rage. Whether your gallivanting around town on the weekends, or sipping coffee at a 9:00 conference – it’s a Bohemian rhapsody all the way.
I distinctively remember my first pair of bell bottoms. It was fall of 7th grade, in the Junior’s department of McAlpin’s (now, Dilliard’s) when I spotted a pair of green and red plaid, polyester pants that just screamed my name. My mom, aghast, was all “I can’t believe you kids are wearing bell bottoms again…” as I insisted my life depended on owning this one pair of polyester pants. The verdict? I got the pants, and so I sashayed around the halls of Junior High in them for a few months feeling oh so cool…while not being very cool, at all. In a nutshell, they were Christmas hippie pants – but what can I say? Those bell bottoms gave me life! It’s always nice to find these on trendy online boutiques!
Cut to many years later when adult me is scanning the latest fall collections and sneering at the appearance of bell-bottoms once again striking the fashion community. Can the polyester wonders that plagued my childhood really be back in style? Are we all destined to have bell bottoms plague our youth at some point? It certainly seems that way. I guess it’s true, all things really do come back around – both the good and the bad. And after a couple seasons of reliving the 90’s, fashion is really hitting the 70’s hard for fall. (And comparatively speaking, I vote the 70’s over the 90’s any day. Sorry, jelly shoes and mom jeans? No and no.)
The 70’s/Boho fashion has been on the rise over the past few years, but until now it’s been relocated to the weekends and the Lollapolooza’s of the world. For fall 2015 though, the runways are forecasting a 70’s takeover, everywhere. That’s right, from your business casual attire at the office – to your bohemian wedding dress, we’re all huffing peace pipes and singing Kumbayah around a bonfire. Peace is love, after all!
I have to admit, there is an effortless “cool” to 70’s clothing. It’s a relaxed vibe, and who doesn’t appreciate feeling comfortable in your clothes? Upon some thought and observation, I’ve added a micro pleated skirt, sailor pant flares and a rustic 70’s print to my fall shopping list. Add to that a platform ankle bootie and I’m in business!
Of course, you could get truly retro and hit up your like Salvation Army and Goodwill, where you no doubt could discover garment treasures from the actual 1970’s, (for the price of a $1 no less). Not everyone is a fan of this trend, though. You could say it’s like taking 1 step forward, followed by 10 steps back to revisit the 70’s for what feels like the umpteenth time – but it’s classic American fashion and I vote it’s good to stay true to our roots. Although, I think I’ll take a pass on any red and green bell bottoms should they appear.
Are you looking forward to the 70’s trend this fall?
