In his ongoing effort to break away from the traditional fashion calendar and forge a new path, the new Alexander Wang collection dropped this month and is “shot to shop”.
What does this mean, exactly? Unlike seasons’ past, there is NO wait time involved before you can snatch up an item for your personal closet. Where previous Wang collections debuted on a fashion week runway before showing up in a store six months later, this new approach eliminates the wait time. It also strips power away from the retail buyer and magazine editor who have customarily held the reigns of control, putting it directly in the hands of the consumer.
A Changing Industry
For the fashion industry as a whole, Wang’s new approach is definitely one to keep an eye on. It’s unlikely the standard fashion calendar would dissolve overnight but it’s entirely possible the fashion week format we’ve all become accustomed to is well and truly on its way out.
In this modern era, the power of the internet and the rise of e-commerce allow designers to dictate sale of their own collections. Designers not only have full creative control over their artform, they’re also not reliant on department store buyers from Saks Fifth Avenue and Net-a-Porter to take interest and put their designs up for sale. Likewise, designers are also no longer fully dependent on fashion magazines advertisements and editors to get the word out about new collections as social media and Google prove to work just fine.
Everything is changing and throughout this evolution, Alexander Wang has been paying attention. He’s writing his own song at the moment and it’s a case study that could forecast major changes to come.
The New Alexander Wang Collection for Fall 2020
Changing fashion industry aside, the new Alexander Wang collection includes a combination of sharp suiting and casual loungewear. As has become tradition from Wang, the full Fall 2020 lineup is largely black with virtually no color to speak of. Standout pieces are a deconstructed shirtdress, tuxedo jackets and a long-line tweed blazer with a chain hem.
