Best Met Gala 2014 Looks
The Met Gala is a unique event in that celebrities and designers work together — and walk the red carpet alongside one another as well.
Some partnerships you could say are predictable – such as Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton as she features in their ad campaigns. Others are surprising, like Rihanna who loves to really shake and mix things up with her looks. In 2014, she paired with Stella McCartney and arrived in a white two-piece look so sharp it might give you a paper cut.
One thing that was glaringly obvious while observing the red carpet appearances was the bulk of those who deviated from the evening’s theme. Other than Zac Posen’s beautiful creation for Dita Von Teese, the rest of best Met Gala 2014 looks march to the beat of their own drum. That’s somewhat disappointing to see as the event celebrated Charles James — a talented designer known for his signature structural gowns. It would have been wonderful to see more architecture appear from participating designers.
Whether on theme or not, there was no shortage of excellence on the red carpet. So much so, that I had to bump my list of Best Met Gala 2014 looks up to fifteen as there was simply no reasonable way to whittle it down to ten. And so with that, I leave with you my favorites below!
Anne Hathaway in Calvin Klein
In addition to being one of the best Met Gala 2014 looks, it could be argued that this is among the greatest looks Anne Hathaway has ever won. It’s vibrant, clean and extremely sleek. Gorgeous!!
Blake Lively in Gucci
Old Hollywood glamour at it’s best! It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Blake on the red carpet and this was a welcomed return. She looked positively radiant!
Dakota Johnson in Jason Wu
As a new girl on the scene, whose about to get huge, (Dakota is scheduled to star in Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy) Jason Wu seems like a really brilliant choice and this is the perfect option for someone young. It’s got the elegant full skirt that’s more traditional for a ball, with the mix up of a shimmering camisole for a twist.
Dita Von Teese in Zac Posen
Zac Posen has a lot of muses out there, but none are quite so perfect for his vision than Dita Von Teese. The two go together perfectly with their classic hourglass silhouette style. This is very va-va-voom…but really, would we expect anything less from this duo?
Florence Welch in Maison Valentino
Florence always makes such elegant and fluid choices with her personal style and it’s a great match seeing her work with Valentino. The time and effort that went into that beautifully detailed floral cape are a solid investment and make this easily one of the Best Met Gala 2014 looks we saw!
Georgie May Jagger in Thierry Mugler
Very few women could pull this dress off. Thus, to see Georgie pull this off so flawlessly of course lands her on my Best Dressed.
Kate Mara in Maison Valentino
It was my dearest wish for Kate Mara to attend the MET Gala this year, as she’s high on my ‘ones-to-watch’ list…and alas, I got my wish. Valentino isn’t what I expected from her but I love her decision to go the ethereal route.
Leighton Meester in Emilio Pucci
While I fully believe Blair Waldorf would absolutely refute this look, especially the awful shoes, I love the cool Bohemian vibe Leighton brought to the red carpet last night. I firmly believe Emilio Pucci needs to be more on the scene as far as these things go – and I was happy to see Creative Director Peter Dundras’ vision represented.
Lily Aldridge in Michael Kors
This could very easily be the best thing Michael Kors has ever designed. Leave it to the gorgeous Lily Aldridge to point that out to the world.
Margot Robbie in Prada
This is perfectly cool and collected.
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
As a face of Louis Vuitton, it wasn’t a surprise to see Michelle Williams sporting LV. It was, however, a twist to see her looking so mod and laid back. I find the detail of this really lovely shift dress and appreciate the unexpected shorter length
Rihanna in Stella McCartney
Like she often does, Rhianna completely stole the scene in this white Stella McCartney.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Balmain
From maybe the strongest Fall 2014 collections, Rosie HW really kills it in this Balmain. The cool girl just got cooler.
Sarah Paulson in Prada
Lupita Nyong’o wore green Prada that’s sure to garner a lot of attention, but I really much preferred Sarah Paulson’s more understated attempt. I tweeted that she did the fashion forward green Prada thing RIGHT – and I stand by that statement. Love this! I mean, I seriously do.
Suki Waterhouse in Burberry
And last but not least is my ultimate favorite from last night’s red carpet! Before she arrived at the event she shared some Instagram shots of this gown and I dubbed it my favorite of the night before anyone else really had arrived. It’s a memorable dress and the way she carries it is so beautiful. Only a model could make this this great.
