It probably wasn’t — but I choose to believe the Natasha Denona Retro eyeshadow palette was designed specifically with me in mind.
From the very moment this palette came across my Instagram feed, I knew there was no resisting purchasing the very second it was released. It’s as though Natasha Denona jumped straight into my mind to bring my dream color story to life! Lust-worthy berry tones mixed with chestnut infused neutrals that make my heart sing almost as much as Adele’s powerhouse vocals.
And really. Could there be a better array of shades for the autumn season? No.
Natasha Denona set out to design the fall palette to end all other fall palettes! Has she successfully completed her mission? Let’s discuss!!

APPLICATION AND CONSISTENCY
After several weeks of testing the Natasha Denona Retro eyeshadow palette out, I wanted to share a full report on how well the two of us are getting along!
Straight away I want to address the level of consistency across the eyeshadows as this is an area I’ve had some issues with from ND in the past. Her Bronze palette while beautiful and highly pigmented, did have a handful of shades with some pretty tricky application issues.
While I’m glad to say those issues are largely resolved – I still think her “matte” formula could use work — or be ditched altogether as the matte cream-to-powder formula really is spectacular. Those shades explicitly defined as “mattes” drag on the skin, creating a patchiness that requires extra patience.
This issue is most notable in the shade “Amara” – which is the top shade on the swatches below:
Buttery Metallics and Cream-to-Powder
I could write a full-length college thesis on why I feel Natasha Denona’s cream-to-powder formula is worthy of awards. Not entirely sure collegiate intellectuals would appreciate my interest in such a topic but it goes without saying they’re fantastic!
But I have to say, Natasha makes some rather fantastic metallic shades as welL! Where many brands produce metallics that are more dry with fallout, Denona’s have a butteriness to them that’s both delightful and surprising!
Highly Pigmented, Long-Lasting Formula
Despite some inconsistency between matte shades, the Natasha Denona Retro eyeshadow palette is a long-lasting one across the board!
Since the palette dropped in early September, I have been thoroughly testing and keeping all 15 shades in heavy rotation on my eyelids. I was try to determine if any of the shadows failed to last as long as others. In the end, though, I found that while there are multiple finishes and a range of light-to-deep shades — every shadow manages to stay put all day long.
I’ll pop this on in the morning over the biggest cup of coffee I can find and enjoy pigmented eyes through around 9 pm before my nightly skincare routine.
Every Shadow I Want – All In One Palette
Natasha Denona is known for having delivered some of the best eyeshadow color stories we’ve seen in recent years. But, as striking as her eyeshadow palettes have been – they don’t always include the basics like a good cream or light taupe shade for blending.
The Retro palette really comes through though, offering those must-have basic transitional shades and a perfectly rich deep brown.

OVERALL GRADE: A-
After giving the Bronze palette a B- last year, I’m quite impressed to see Natasha Denona step up her game quite a bit!
The Retro eyeshadow palette was one that stole my heart from the first image I saw of it online — and managed to keep my heart over the last several weeks of testing! Every morning, I apply this to my eyes and feel like I could burst out into song I enjoy the palette so much.
In addition to the variety of finishes between shades, we also have a nice mix of warm and cool undertones! For me — that fact makes the Natasha Denona Retro eyeshadow palette one that will work universally for everyone.
It’s really going to be incredibly difficult deciding this and Pat McGrath’s Huetopian Dream (reviewed, here) as my favorite for the year!
