Answering your most burning questions on mask-proof lipstick and revealing top formulas for a transfer-proof pout.
Hello to my fellow beauty and lipstick-loving mavens! Over on the DreaminLace Instagram, a few questions have sprung up recently about mask-proof lipstick tips. Sure. It’s not a subject I think any of us are particularly excited to consider, but given the times it’s very much a relevant topic.
After answering those questions in my Instagram DMs, I thought it made perfect sense to discuss my approach to mask-proof lipstick openly here on DreaminLace as well.
My Mask-Proof Lipstick Routine
Without question, we are living in an era where facial coverings are a necessary safety measure for public health. And, like so many of you, my typical lipstick routine simply doesn’t work well at this time. Those beloved “shine” and “satin” lipsticks in my collection work fine when I’m on my own, but can get quite messy behind a mask when venturing out in public.
And so, like just about everything else this year, the need to wear a face mask prompted me to change my lipstick routine. When running errands on the weekend? I typically opt out from wearing a lip product at all beyond a plain balm. I just don’t feel the need to take that extra step for sorting through avocados at the grocery or picking up a prescription at the pharmacy in a mask.
Outside of super casual errands? I still very much enjoy wearing lipstick! While not necessary, wearing lipstick makes me feel more put together and presentable. A lipstick also brings a sense of normalcy that’s oddly comforting at a time when so much has changed. So yes, even if just on a Zoom call — I still enjoy my lipsticks. That said, they are definitely not all face-mask approved!
Down below, I share my top 3 mask-proof lipstick tips as well as my most favorite formulas! Hopefully these suggestions will help you continue having fun with your makeup, without worrying about creating a mess behind your mask.
Mask-Proof Lipstick Tips
1. Liquid Matte Lipsticks Are Your Friend
I’ll be the first to admit that liquid lipsticks have never been my cup of tea — till 2020 hit. Suddenly, these often overlooked lipsticks in my collection are the ones getting the most use! They’re loaded with full-coverage pigment, last an incredibly long time on the lips and are transfer-proof while wearing a mask.
My most preferred formulas Dior Ultra Care, Stila Stay-All-Day, Lipslut and both Lime Crime’s Matte Velvetines and Plushies. They each apply similar to a lip gloss with a wand applicator, but set into a beautiful matte finish that’s surprisingly lightweight.
2. Choose a Matte Finish
Prefer a standard lipstick over a liquid one? One with a matte finish is best! Apply to your lips as normal, then allow time to fully set for about 3 minutes before venturing out in a mask.
3. Use Translucent Setting Powder
Don’t have any matte bullet or liquid lipsticks on hand? No worries! You can convert any satin or cream finish into a mask-proof lipstick with the help of your favorite translucent powder! This is definitely one of my favorite beauty secrets as it not only helps you create a stunning matte finish on the fly, it also is incredibly effective at extending your lipstick’s wear-time. An excellent trick to keep in your back pocket!
The Notorious RBG Lipstick
Before I go, I wanted to give a special shoutout to the Notorious RBG lipstick I’m wearing in these photos. I ordered it several weeks ago from the indie brand Lipslut and was delighted when it arrived in the mail this week! Isn’t it beautiful? What a fantastic lipstick and a great way to honor the American icon that is Miss Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I hope these mask-proof lipstick tips help you continue having fun with your makeup during this time.
Sending love! x
