Pucker up for one of beauty’s biggest trends! Today, we discuss how to wear metallic lipstick.
Beauty trends definitely come and go, but one that seems to truly be sticking around a while? Metallic lipstick. Maybe it’s Kylie Jenner leaving her mark on society or perhaps we’re just feeling a bit bored with our basic matte and satins, but if there’s one product you should be adding to your collection this year, metallic lipstick is it!
When it came time to figuring out how to wear metallic lipstick, I was a little skeptical that this was a trend I could wear in the daytime. Heck, I was a little skeptical this was a trend I could pull off…at all. Then, I discovered the Lime Crime Velvetine Liquid Metallic lipsticks and started to warm up to the idea. After all, if I can rock bold purple or black lipstick, just how difficult could a metallic lipstick be to wear?
All in all, metallic lipstick is generally a less intimidating beauty trend than you might initially think. Any fear I had of my lips looking awkwardly out of place were immediately put to rest when I sported my first metallic lip. Today, I’m going to demonstrate my FAVORITE way to wear metallic lipstick, with a look that requires no advance makeup skills or extra badges of courage.
First, let me introduce you to Lana:
Lana is a rich brown metallic lipstick that I’ve recently fallen head over heals for. She’s a member of Lime Crime’s Velvetine Metallic Liquid Lipstick collection. In case you missed it, I actually shared a post recently with the full color selection, here. While there are certainly many shades to love and devour, I strongly gravitated towards Lana. My auburn hair and complexion, coupled with the fall weather, seemed like the perfect match for a metallic brown lipstick.
After happily wearing Lime Crime’s Lana for a couple weeks now, I feel pretty comfortable saying that I am ON BOARD with the metallic lipstick trend. That said, there are a few things I like to keep in mind:
How to Wear Metallic Lipstick: Your Lips are the Star!
One thing I especially like to keep in mind when wearing a metallic lipstick: let the lips be the star of your face! Meaning, no need for your lips to compete with your eyes, flashy highlight or bold rosy cheeks. Sticking to the basics, I create a subtle neutral eye makeup look that compliments the lips…without distracting from them. I also try to stick with a blush tone that doesn’t clash with the lipstick and tone down any “glowing” products. Since your lips will be shining and metallic, no need to go overboard on the highlighter and dewy foundations.
How to Wear Metallic Lipstick: All Shades are Not Created Equal
Selecting the right shade for your coloring is also key. Unlike lip glosses or sheer lipsticks, a metallic lipstick is a bold statement and you can’t escape its coloring. They’re rich with pigment and draw attention. Think about your hair and skin-tones. Since my complexion is more fair, pastel and lighter shades have a tendency to wash me out and I have to be uber careful around traditional Barbie pinks. Or, perhaps you have a darker complexion and those shades are more vivid and work for you.
Consider your favorite lip colors when selecting a shade. A metallic lipstick will certainly up the ante of that color, so you’ll want to stick with colors you feel most comfortable wearing. For me, browns have always been my thing.
How to Wear Metallic Lipstick: Pay Attention While Applying
Unlike those sheer lipsticks or lip glosses that I throw on my face on the go, without a mirror and in traffic – metallic lipsticks require a bit more attention when applying. If you’re not careful, you can end up swiping the stuff all over your face and trust me, a streak of metallic brown on your cheek is not a cute look. Always use a mirror and make sure you have a few extra minutes than usual for applying a lipstick, because it will need time to dry/set. I also vote against rubbing your lips together. I know that’s a beauty habit that can sometimes be difficult to break, but it’s just not ideal for metallic lipstick. Use the applicator to apply product around your lips, wait a couple of minutes for setting and then you’re good to go.
I’m happy to report that any skepticism I once had about the metallic lipstick trend is dead in the water! I love the added flare metallic lips bring to my daily makeup look and it’s fun to experiment with different lip options. The Lime Crime lipsticks in particular wear very nicely and are super-light weight on the lips, unlike some other liquid lipstick I have tried. To boot, Lime Crime is certified 100% vegan and cruelty-free, plus…a lot more easier to get your hands on than a Kyle Lip Kit.
