Thom Browne: a controversial name in fashion, and perhaps one of those most original thinkers in today’s fashion industry. It’s a fun thing to have someone you can expect to throw you off guard. Known for bringing theatrics to the runway, Browne is a master, visionary artist who will keep us guessing again and again just where he’ll go next.
Thom Browne Spring 2015 Collection was filled with gorgeous bright colors for spring, fishnets, the occasional plastic poncho and some intricate yet larger than life hats. It was a collection at the opposite end of the spectrum than his Spring 2014 Collection, which featured dramatic and structured silhouettes. This time around, things get a bit fun with clothes that are prime for cheerful occasions. The hats were particularly exciting and had me wanting to rewatch the classic Audrey Hebpurn in My Fair Lady for that fantastic hat she wears to the races.
Do we live in a culture that seriously undervalues ornate headwear? Yes! Or at least I do, being in the States. The Brits are pretty into it when it comes to creative, chic hats. Us Americans really ought to step up our game! Thom Browne masterfully blended traditional lady fashion, such as Chanel-esque tweed suits – with more alternative and modern splashes of color. Perhaps on paper they don’t sound like a natural fit, but in reality it was a fun ride from start to end.
And so that’s that – I really need to get myself some fine hats. It’s obvs an essential now!
