Daniel Roseberry’s Schiaparelli Fall 2021 couture collection lights up the fashion circuit like a firework does the sky.
Ask me what I love most about the Fourth of July and I’ll tell you two things: cookouts in my red, white & blue and couture week! How these two occasions have come to align on the annual calendar I do not know – but I greatly appreciate that they do!
In many ways, I’ve come to think of the autumnal couture collections that emerge every first week of July as sartorial fireworks displays, only better! Where fireworks sizzle out in a mere seconds, great couture lasts a lifetime. ‘Tis the power of fashion after all and Schiaparelli is back again lighting up the couture week schedule like the biggest firework in the sky!
An American in Paris
In Schiaparelli’s case, Americans can delight in the added joy of knowing its one of our own serving as captain of a certified couture mothership!
Creative Director Daniel Roseberry is originally from the great state of Texas. And it was in Texas that he first discovered an interest in fashion design at the age of 14. That interest turned into a love for and later a career in fashion. For a decade he worked alongside fellow American designer Thom Browne before stepping into the (huge) role of continuing Elsa Schiaparelli’s legacy at one of the most treasured fashion houses in existence.
Schiaparelli Fall 2021 Couture Collection
After successfully challenging the preconceived genre norms this spring, Roseberry approached the Schiaparelli Fall 2021 couture collection with feelings of warm nostalgia. He embraced the days of his youth and the styles that most captivated him as he developed his love for fashion.
Entitled “The Matador”, the Schiaparelli Fall 2021 couture collection focuses on three major themes across 26 looks:
- Reimagining the cropped matador-style jackets designed by Elsa in the 1930s
- Focusing on jewels and the human body (i.e. eyes, ears, hands, lips and lungs), signatures of the house codes
- Celebrating color in both an over-the-top and intentional way
With four couture collections now under his belt, it’s clear Roseberry excels in honoring the heritage of Schiaparelli. He also excels while leading the house beyond boundaries and into a state of awareness that the world around us is changing.
In his personal notes on the Schiaparelli Fall 2021 couture designs, Daniel Roseberry reflects on how one year ago he felt he was designing for the end of the world. But the world didn’t end, nor did fashion. He also shared his hopes on how we will all move forward in this new era!
Here’s what I want: No more cookie-cutter fashion. No more pieces that look like they could have been made by anyone. No more cynicism. No more irony. No more timidity. No more coolness. Give me more beauty, more earnestness, more romance, more effort.
I hope this collection reminds everyone who encounters it of the sheer delight that fashion can bring us in hard times, and with it, the promise of more joy when the clouds part. Give me more fashion. Give me more hope.
