Virginie Viard unveiled her Chanel Pre-Fall 2021 collection at runway fashion show held at the famed Chateau de Chenonceau. Let’s discuss!
As the wheels of 2020 roll on, the Chanel Pre-Fall 2021 collection made its debut at a runway fashion show before an audience of one: Kristen Stewart!
The house also adhered to its tradition of premiering their latest designs in the most lavish and extra way possible. Traveling from Paris to the Loire Valley, Chanel took over the famed Chateau de Chenonceau — which creative director Virginie Viard sites as inspiration for the new collection. Chenonceau (nicknamed the Woman’s Castle) was once home to Catherine de’ Medici and her nemesis Diane de Poitiers.
When Virginie Viard visited Chenonceau earlier this year, she was struck by how its design and gardens invoked so much of Gabrielle (aka Coco) Chanel’s style. Thus, it became a focal point for the Pre-Fall 2021 Collection with skirts designed to match the chateau’s tiling and floral prints inspired by the lavish gardens spread across the grounds.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Chateau de Chenonceau and would agree. It’s quite a striking property, rich with history and gorgeous architecture. It does make for a great backdrop to a fashion show and I can see why Viard was inspired to design a collection around it.

Grading Chanel Pre-Fall 2021
In the latest episode of the FASHION FORWARD FRIENDS podcast, co-host Thomas Monks and I deliver our gut reactions to the Chanel Pre-Fall 2021 collection.
If you’ve listened to previous episodes, you’ll know that we haven’t yet been too impressed by Virginie Viard’s chapter at Chanel. She took over the house following the iconic Karl Lagerfeld’s passing and while her designs stay true to the house’s legacy, she’s been slow to put her own footprint on Chanel as the new creative director.
Turning on our microphones, Thomas and I discuss the collection’s designs and motif while also reflecting on pieces we’d love for Nicole Kidman to wear — and other looks we’d like to completely disappear. Before the episode’s end, we also issue our final grades on Virginie Viard’s Chanel Pre-Fall 2021 collection. What do we think? You’ll have to tune in to find out!
