In my PR studies in college, I vividly remember taking a course on leadership rhetoric. Okay, from the name of it it sounds kind of dull but it was actually a brilliant class. At 8 am (ouch), we studied the public speaking style of leaders from all walks of life. Bill Gates, Harvey Milk, FDR and yes, Martin Luther King Jr are just a sampling of the names on our course agenda.

Digesting old clips of these leaders at work, we took note of the effective approaches they took to connect with their audiences. From vocal tone to emphasizing key points and using repetition as a tool to really drive home their message. There was definitely a lot on the table to discuss. It was actually pretty fascinating to see how everyone’s leadership communication style varied – while each being successful at the same time.

Martin Luther King Jr is a name that commonly comes to mind when you think of the great “orators” of the world. (Yes, I just pulled out the word orator. I feel like I’m a COMM student all over again!) He was emphatic. His preach-liker style lit a flame that ignited a movement and created national change.

So in honor of his national holiday, I wanted to share 10 inspiring Martin Luther King Jr quotes to live by! It’s 2021 and there’s great unrest here in the United States – as well as around the world. There’s a lot that surely would disappoint MLK if he were with us still today…but I wager he’d also be able to find a lot of hope for a better future.

As a leader, MLK called upon the public to build a bridge and come together. He understood that while we all have our differences, we also have our similarities and it is those that unite us. He also was a big believer in speaking out and getting involved with your communities – be it in big or small ways. 

I didn’t include it below, but when looking for inspiring Martin Luther King Jr quotes one of the favorites I found was when he talked about how we all come from different backgrounds and walks of life but live together on the same ship. I think that is oh so true and one of the biggest reasons I think it’s important that we lift everyone up, not just ourselves. And when we lift others up, it trickles down to make a better world for us as individuals to live in. It sounds hokey, but I’ve always believed that a society is only as strong as its “weakest link”. And, like MLK shared, in working together we create a better future for everyone.
