Let’s be honest, dressing for work in the sweltering hot months of summer is rough. After all, it’s hard to look cute when you appear drenched in a downpour of sweat. My rule of thumb? Wear light, breathable clothes…that move.
Sometimes I feel like I live in a tropical rain forest. Global warming gives us scorching hot summers, and the humidity is so high – at times I feel like I’m having an asthma attack. Let’s be real: summer is hardcore these days. Add to all that the added challenge that my day job frequently has me outdoors, walking several acres and snapping pictures – and I’m left with the daily chore of getting dressed being quite the challenge.
Summer fashion. Hmm. So, how does one dress for high heat, while looking somewhat professional and cute? Very lightly. Ditching the heavy cottons in favor of slinky fabrics that are lightweight and loose-fitting is the only way to survive. To combat frigid air conditioning in between, I’m always bringing along a jacket or cardigan. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I get more use out of my sweaters in the summer months than I do in the winter! Some people take their air conditioning WAY to seriously. To get around it, layering is the only way to go!
For a summer work wardrobe, I think light and simple is the only way to go. Of course, always keep a sweater or two on-hand in your car, because you never know when you’ll step into a building that’s colder than the Arctic Ocean.
I vote the absolute easiest thing to throw on in the summertime is a sundress. It’s effortless, always looks good and is comfortable as heck. Though, I’m surprisingly also a big fan of shorts at the workplace. It may sound strange, but when done right, shorts can look pretty polished. Pair a classic pair of white shorts with a jacket or blazer over a loose blouse, and you’re set. Just beware, when I say shorts – I don’t mean your Daisy Dukes. No one wants to see you turning up to work in hot pants.
Please, take a second and let me know in a comment what YOUR summer must-have is for work. Are you a sundress or capris kind of gal?
