Embracing the blotted lip trend, the Buxom Pillow Pout lipstick offers something we’ve never seen before.
If you’re clued into the runways and read up on your fashion magazines, it’s absolutely no secret that the blotted lip trend continues to rage on.
And so, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Buxom Cosmetics took the look as inspiration for developing their latest lip product release: a powder lipstick that creates that perfectly ‘blotted’ effect…without having to waste any tissues along the way.
Meet the Buxom Pillow Pout Lipstick
If you’re asking yourself, “What the heck is a powder lipstick?”…you’re probably not alone.
In fact, when Buxom introduced the product to me I did a little head scratching and double-taking myself. Over the years, I’ve seen and read about all SORTS of lipsticks…but the idea of applying one made of powder was altogether new to me and a concept I couldn’t quite wrap my head around.
Once I realized the Buxom Pillow Pout powder lipstick is designed to achieve the blotted lip look instantly, it immediately started to make sense. For numerous seasons, I’ve watched blotted lips charge down the high fashion runways and have actually read magazine articles on how to achieve the look by either blotting again and again on tissues or blotting in some loose translucent powder.
In the end, what Buxom is delivering is a solution that simplifies and fool-proofs such an in-demand makeup trend.
So How Does it Work?
The secret behind the Buxom Pillow Pout powder lipstick, is that the lipstick cap is way more important than you might immediately think.
Typically, lipstick caps are tossed aside when applying a product – only to be put back on when you’re ready to store a lipstick back in your handbag or vanity.
With Pillow Pout, however, the lipstick cap is actually the SOURCE of the product as the powder lives in the cap itself.
Inside the cap, you’ll find colorful powder to help you masterfully create a blotted lip look with the sponge-tip applicator.
It’s quite the inventive little design, isn’t it? See, engineering isn’t just for planes, trains and automobiles. It applies to lipstick as well! *wink*
If you’re thinking to yourself “Powder sounds kind of messy,” Buxom’s product engineers have you covered there as well.
To keep the powder secure, the lipstick cap screw into and out of place.
That means, when you’re ready to apply you will need to twist off the cap – then twist it back on to secure everything in its rightful place when you’re done. And since we all know lipsticks can bounce around and come undone in our handbags, it’s a good thing you actually need to make a few twists to completely open/close the lipstick.
Now, Let’s Get Down to Business
Now that you’re acquainted with the concept and design of the new Buxom Pillow Pout powder lipsticks, let’s get down to the real business: how do they look, feel and last?
Earlier this month, the Buxom team reached out asking if I’d want to give the new lipsticks a trial run – and I obviously said yes. After all, it would be criminal to turn down the chance to try a new lipstick out – right?
With 10 colors to choose from, narrowing my choices down to two was pretty tricky. Ultimately, I knew I wanted to explore with both a nude and a more energetic shade. So, I decided to go with ‘Cuddle Me’ (a dusty rose) and ‘Spoil Me’ (a cool-toned magenta).

A Matte Finish
As you can pretty easily tell, the finish of Boxom Pillow Pout lipsticks is definitely matte. I definitely want to point this out as the packaging says they are ‘creamy’. While I would absolutely describe the texture when applying to be one of a ‘creamy matte’, they definitely don’t have a creamy appearance on the lips. (Getting technical here but as you know, technicalities count.)
To give you a better look, allow me to model both of the lipsticks for your so you can see Cuddle Me and Spoil Me in action!

I feel like this post is starting to turn into an essay of sorts, so I promise – I’m going to cover the basics for you as quickly as I can now. Let’s go!
How do they feel on the lips?
I suppose it goes without saying as we’re talking about a powder here, but the lipstick feels comfortably lightweight on the lips. Upon applying, at first you’ll feel a bit of a cooling sensation of sorts – but after a few minutes that passes and the lipstick essentially feels like nothing.
How long do they last?
I gotta put a bit of a disclaimer on this one: I’ve spent a lot of time outside in the heat and have been drinking loads of water. So in the end, I didn’t find that the Pillow Pout lipsticks have an incredibly long wear-time. That of course is because I’ve been guzzling water like its my job, but even with buckets of water I got about three hours of weartime. (I estimate that goes up to 5 hours if you’re not a fish, though.)
Pigmentation:
I found the Buxom Pillow Pout powder itself has a great amount of pigment to it, but the color of course does become muted as you blot it onto your lips with the sponge applicator. (That, of course, is the whole point though.) If you want more dramatic lips, I definitely suggest adding multiple layers. The product is so lightweight it won’t be too bulky and the pigment does build nicely.
Color Selection:
Currently the collection includes 10 shades, ranging from nudes to a true red…all the way to a deep berry. (It’s also worth mentioning the shades also have darling names.)
Price and Availability:
Buxom is selling the Pillow Pout lipsticks at $22 a pop. They’re available on the Buxom Cosmetics website and Sephora.
Overall Thoughts:
Honestly, I’m still a little struck by how UNIQUE the Buxom Pillow Pout lipsticks truly are! I never would have considered using a powder as lipstick before, so my mind is kind of ‘blown’ by the whole thing. Props to Buxom Cosmetics for stepping way outside of the box and delivering something altogether new in lipstick that we haven’t seen before.
If you’re a fan of the blotted lip makeup trend, I definitely think you’re going to enjoy these and the finish is beautiful for the fall months ahead.
They’re incredibly comfortable to wear and have a nice range of colors to satisfy whatever palette you’re going for.
At first, I was a bit skeptical of the concept but after wearing these for several days…I’ve come to really enjoy them and absolutely LOVE applying them. Not going to lie, there’s something a bit addictive about using these beauties. They’re satisfying!
Now that I’ve sufficiently BABBLED away about these new lippies…I’m going to head on out. But thank so much for reading…especially all the way to the end. xo
