Let’s talk home workout routine essentials for keeping up with your fitness goals as the pandemic continues!
Real talk: I don’t think anyone expected to be staying away from the gym this long.
When lockdown hit in March 2020 it became in obvious reality — but all hopes were to resume normal fitness routines sooner than later. Well, here we are nearly a year later with the pandemic showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. (Excuse me while I internally weep for a moment.)
Gyms have reopened in most places, but if the idea of strapping on a mask for a session on the elliptical and taking chances with high-touch weight machines doesn’t appeal to you, alternative options are needed! Luckily alternative options are available with on-demand fitness programs as well as an assortment of all the equipment you need to get an effective workout in at home.
While there is so much I miss about getting my workout in at the gym (hello people watching, talking to people face-to-face in classes and chill time in the sauna), I’ve been redefining my fitness routine throughout the pandemic. My standard classes and sessions bouncing around bulky equipment at the gym have been replaced with lots of outdoor cardio and on-demand classes.
Is it the same? No.
Do I still look forward to returning to gym life? Yes.
But I’ve been finding ways to stay motivated and make workouts fun. I’ve also been challenging myself to try new things like using resistance bands instead of free weights in my strength training — which is something I’ve really enjoyed!!
To help you on your fitness journey, I’ve pulled together an overview of home workout routine essentials that will help you in your efforts to stay fit while staying safe!
OUTDOOR WORKOUT GEAR
One downside of this time of year is cold weather. On the flip side? Time outdoors is great for lifting our spirits, so I’ve taken to gearing up in warm clothes for outdoor workouts — even in the unfavorable weather conditions. Fortunately, there are lots of options out there to keep us warm while we do our cardio!
Home Workout Routine Equipment
In developing your home work out routine – it goes without saying you’re going to need your own equipment. Workout mats are an obvious essential and a variation of hand weights can help you tone your arms and shoulders. A more lightweight but very effective alternative to weights are resistance bands — which I’ve been having so much fun exploring!
Pro Tip: Use SAVEONGAIAM for 15% off workout equipment.
HOME WORKOUT ROUTINE ESSENTIALS – FITNESS TRACKER
Be it an Apple Watch, a FitBit or otherwise — wearing a fitness tracker is an excellent way to stay on top of your daily activity and track patterns over time. The stats are also kind of fun to keep track of and help encourage you to keep up!
HOME WORKOUT ROUTINE PROGRAMS
A downside of not visiting the gym is missing out on in-person classes. Fortunately there are a number of programs that have sprung up that provide at home workout routine options for every fitness level!
APPLE FITNESS+: Whether you have an Apple Watch or not, the Fitness+ program has something available for anyone with an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. At $9.99 a month, subscribers get access to on demand classes in HIIT, treadmill walking, dance, cycling, yoga, core and more.
BEACHBODY ON DEMAND: If you’re looking for an all inclusive program that also targets your diet, Beachbody On Demand is a great way to go. They have a wide variety of fitness classes for every fitness level, as well as guided diet plans to help you hit your weightloss goals.
PELOTON: In addition to their popular bikes and treadmills, Peloton offers an app that features on demand and live classes for everyone — whether you have a bike or not. Workouts are broken into 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minute intervals and cover a wide range of topics. The Peloton app offers a free 30 day trial and is $12.99 after that.
This is the program I’m currently using and I love it! The instructors are all very inspiring and while it’s not the same as in-person classes at the gym, there is a community-based feel to Peloton that’s fantastic.
OBE FITNESS: For $27 a month, OBE Fitness offers unlimited on-demand and live online workouts! Classes range from HIIT workouts at varying lengths to pilates, barre and even trampolines. They are most known for their signature 28-minute workouts that maximize your workout with out a huge time commitment.
JAZZERCISE ON DEMAND: For those looking for a fun workout, Jazzercise is a fantastic option as you’re basically dancing your way to a healthy body. In person classes are available at studios across the pandemic, but they also have an on-demand program for users to have fun while staying active at home. There are 10, 20, 40 and 60 minute classes available and the program starts at $19.99 a month.
