Prabal Gurung has quickly boosted up the fashion world to become one of the most must-see designers. His collections are always very strong and well, a little bit odd…but in a good way! I was really interested to see what he would do for his Spring 2014 collection, because each collection of his is very different. He’s sort of the expect the unexpected of the fashion world in a way.
So the unexpected of his Spring collection presented Saturday at New York Fashion Week, was a very Orient inspired collection that focused heavily on pastels. Pastels aren’t typically something unexpected for spring, but this collection focused so heavily on them in head to toe solid color that it added a hole new palette to the spring collections.
These looks kicked off the runway show and I had quite a furrowed brow both the first and the second time I watched through. But you know what’s interesting? Is that though I didn’t like them, this is the only collection I have watched a second time so far. So I guess that’s saying something! I think on first impression I was adverse to them because they are really overpowering. But on the second round I did warm up to them slightly because they really are so different, not to mention editorial.
But once the Easter parade of pastels passed through, we came into a very punchy line of looks that had me feeling much happier.
I love color, (which is probably why I was so opposed to the pastels) and I appreciate bold color choices. And these pieces kind of own it don’t they? I really love the shoes and sunglasses as well. They’re very architecturally interesting. They also really compliment the clothes nicely and each have their own unique look.
The makeup at Prabal Gurung, was done by MAC Cosmetics. I thought that was a perfect match before I saw the show. After viewing this collection I have to say it’s a total match in heaven. MAC’s lipsticks especially have such a broad range of color. And as Prabal Gurung sure was giving the color wheel a workout with his pastels and poppy bold colors, the two really do go hand in hand very nicely.
I love the lines of Prabal’s work. They’re so crisp and defined! And in the above looks you can see just how diversified his pieces can be and all maintain that same sharp look.
Oh, you didn’t think you would escape a little black and white action in this show did you? Because here you go:
It is becoming a tad overwhelming all the black and white of these spring collections, but I think what I like about the looks in this range of the Prabal Gurung show is that each look while black and white, is actually very different. It makes me want to just spend a day in this guy’s head because he has so much vision! No two looks were the same and yet they were in the (slightly overdone) black and white we so often see.
Overall I would say that I do really like this collection. While not everything is exactly my taste, I find all of it quite interesting which is exactly what fashion week is about, right?. Tell me, what did you think of this collection? What looks were your favorite? I’m really interested to know!
