It’s been a HOT minute since I’ve tried something new from Tarte Cosmetics.
Since March 2020 to be exact — which is criminal considering what a long-running success streak they’ve had when it comes to providing my makeup collection with fantastic products.
Mascara in particular is an area where the brand has always excelled. So when the Tarte’s Tubing mascara appeared before my eyes whilst browsing Ulta’s new arrival page earlier this summer I couldn’t resist picking it up. Its impressive results prompted me to include it among my Summer 2022 makeup favorites but it occurs to me I never gave the product a proper review. SO that’s what we’re tackling today!
Are you ready to learn about a new mascara you might want to seriously consider adding to your collection? Keep reading, below!
Tarte Tubing Mascara Review
When reviewing the ingredients, I had to immediately salute the Tarte Tubing mascara for providing nourishment to the lashes throughout the day. The surge of makeup products that provide skincare benefits is a trend I’ve been really loving and it’s great to see that translate over to the eyelashes as well!
KEY INGREDIENTS
- SHEA BUTTER: Conditions the lashes
- CASTOR OIL: Moisturizes
- CARNAUBA WAX: Softens, lengthens and volumizes
Turn Up the Drama
If you’re on the hunt for a modest look, the Tarte Tubing mascara might not be the best pick for you because boy does it bring the drama! It delivers intense volume to the lashes that rivals Pat McGrath’s landmark Dark Star mascara and really makes the eyes pop while holding an extreme curl.
Tubing Mascara?
Obviously with a name like “Tubing Mascsara” one would assume the product actually is one. If you’re not familiar, unlike traditional mascaras that use a wax formula — tubing mascaras have polymers that wrap around the lashes and create “tubes”. At the end of the day is where you can really tell a difference as product comes off as “tubes” while removing makeup. This overall is a more gentle approach and lead to less shedding of lashes.
I found myself scratching my head here, however, as I noticed no difference to regular mascara when removing with warm water or eye makeup remover. Over time I started to wonder if I was just imaging things but while reading through others reviews I found people consistently ran into the issue of liking the mascara but finding it not to be a tubing product as described.
How Does It Perform:
While I didn’t put Tarte’s claim that the mascara wears for 24 hours to the test — I did wear this for several weeks over long days and in extreme heat and humidity. I even wore this into the pool which was a risk but when I looked in the mirror afterward I was pleasantly surprised to see I hadn’t transformed into a raccoon.
We’ve had a very hot and humid summer as well so I feel I can confidently say the products is heat, humidity and sweat-proof!
APPLICATOR DESIGNED TO DEFINE
When looking at the results of the Tarte Tubing mascara, I have to say I’m surprised how much volume really can come up from such a slim and plastic applicator. The wand itself is reported to have 296 bristles and they certainly get the job done! The design is also very useful for building up product and adding multiple coats to the lashes without major clumping issues.
HOW TO APPLY
Starting at the base of your lashes, twirl the mascara wand while moving upwards. Build to your desired results.

Overall Grade: B+
Do I love the Tarte Tubing mascara? Yes. Am I having to overlook the fact that it’s not really a true “tubing” mascara? Also yes. At the end of the day, though – my heart has to go with how the results it brings my lashes and how well it performs throughout the day. And in those aspects, it’s undeniably great!
The marketing team did Tarte a disservice calling this verbatim “Tubing” mascara because it will understandably raise questions from consumer who are specifically looking for that but if you’re searching for a vegan product that brings long-lasting volume to your lashes I think you’ll be pleased.
