With a clean and entirely vegan formula, the new Biossance Dark Spot serum seeks to banish signs of hyperpigmentation. But does it deliver? Let’s review!

Probably one of the most pesky of pesky skincare concerns? Dark spots. Also known as hyperpigmentation or sun spots, whatever terminology you prefer.
These brown spots can occur after breakouts or naturally from exposure to the sun. They develop on areas of your skin that are producing more melanin and yes, they’re very common.
And while dark spots are in fact nothing to be particularly concerned about and don’t require seeking professional medical treatment, they’re annoying. They’re also a fact of life that many of us wish we could banish away with the help of a magical wand or a twinkle of our noses ala Samantha in Bewitched.
I know I personally have a few on my left cheekbones that drive me mad every morning until I hide them from view with the help of my most beloved Pat McGrath concealer.
Biossance Dark Spot Serum
In my ongoing quest to rid my complexion of innocent but annoying spots of discoloration, the Biossance Dark Spot serum immediately caught my eye when it launched earlier this year!
I’m an existing fan of Biossance and love that all of their products not only use clean ingredients — they’re also entirely cruelty-free. The Vitamin C + Rose Oil has a prominent role in my nighttime skincare routine and has been very effective in brightening my complexion and evening my skin’s texture.
When the Biossance Dark Spot serum came along I instantly picked it up to see how it would compare. It’s formulated with:
- 10% Vitamin C
- Biossance’s signature plant-based squalane oil
- White shiitake mushrooms
- Licorice root extract
Now that I’ve sufficiently wrapped up using my first bottle of Biossance’s newest potion, I am ready to report my findings with you below!
Non-Irritating Formula
I’ve tested a number of products designed to target hyperpigmentation and found that some where quite harsh on my somewhat sensitive skin. So, I was quite pleased with just how calming the Biossance Dark Spot serum was when applied and with continued use. It does not create that feeling of rawness I’ve felt accumulate with routine use of other anti-aging serums.
Coupled with squalane oil, which reduces inflammation — the serum has a nicely balanced formula and is one I’d recommend to anyone else who experiences skin sensitivity – particularly with Vitamin C.
Licorice Root for Sun Protection
I love the brightening effect of Vitamin C but with it does come the concern of my skin being more vulnerable to UV damage. So I very much like that Biossance added licorice root to this serum — which is known to protect your skin from the sun while defending premature signs of aging.
That said, I don’t want anyone to think licorice root is a qualified substitute for sunscreen. It is absolutely still a MUST that you continue to use and reapply SPF in your daily skincare regimen. My current favorite is this SPF 50 from Clinique.
Squalane Oil Nourishes and Moisturizes
I think we all kind of freak out a bit when we hear the dreaded word “oil.” As irrational as it may be, we start envisioning our complexions turning into a greasy mess – which while healthy, might not necessarily be the most cute.
But there are in fact GOOD oils for our diets as well as our skincare routines — and squalane is one of them.
Providing balance to your complexion, squalane oil actually helps control the oil levels you naturally produce. It also moisturizes and hydrates your skin. This is all wonderful news as is the reality that squalane oil works hand-in-hand beautifully with Vitamin C to naturally brighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Cruelty-Free Squalane
The benefits of squalane oil are immense, but they come with a price. It’s an ingredient that’s historically derived from sharks.
Determined to find a better way, Bissoance scientists developed a plant-derived squalane from sugar cane. In studies, the plant-based ingredient proved every bit as effective while also protecting our oceans. This will give you wonderful peace of mind as a 100% cruelty-free and vegan skincare alternative. (Learn more about this on Biossance’s website, here.)
Light Consistency That’s Great Under Makeup
While testing this new Biossance serum, I first started out using the product at nighttime. But what I found was the serum has such a light and almost gel-like consistency, that I started using this in the morning before my SPF. It’s soaks evenly and smoothly into the skin without a greasy residue and works beautifully under makeup.
How Effective Was the Serum On My Dark Spots?
Moderate.
The strong dark spots on my left cheekbone that accumulated while driving over the years have faded, but still remain. Now that I’m very consistent with applying SPF every day, I hopefully won’t develop any more of those but to make those spots I do have completely go away I feel I’ll need to enlist a professional laser.
New signs of hyperpigmentation from recent blemishes? Gone completely! Which is certainly excellent news.
An Effective Line of Defense In Your Skincare Routine
Ultimately, I think the Dark Spots serum from Biossance is a great line of defense for keeping new and future spots at bay.
Coupled with a daily SPF, it’s an excellent product for preventing future damage to your skin that may arise from breakouts or sun exposure. And given that the most important thing when cultivating your skincare routine is protecting the skin you have from future issues, this is a wonderful clean, natural and gentle serum that ticks a lot of preventative boxes.
Think of it like kale for the skin! *wink*
Will I Be Ordering Again?
Yes! I really love the soft, smooth texture of this serum and find it super hydrating! It works great under makeup and has proved to be very effective at controlling oil throughout the day as well as targeting signs of hyperpigmentation. It has earned itself a regular spot in my morning skincare routine!
