If you’re looking for what to binge watch over the holidays – you’re in luck! Here’s a selection of must-see shows you can safely stream from home.
There’s a span of time between Christmas and New Year’s I look forward to every year. In addition to enjoying a much slower pace, sleeping in, indulging on holiday leftovers and perhaps staying in my PJs all day on occasion –it’s also a time I usually sit back, relax and do a little binge watching of series on my watch list that I haven’t gotten to yet. This year, I have plans to spend my post-Christmas days in a state of bliss, drinking hot toddies whilst working my way through The Crown (Netflix) and finally watching The Morning Show (Apple TV+).
What to Binge Watch Over the Holidays
In the likely event you till will be lounging around at home this Christmas, I thought I’d pull together a list for your of some streaming suggestions! Knowing what to binge watch over the holidays can definitely seem a bit overwhelming with SO many options out there, but series listed for you below are ones I’ve really enjoyed watching that are well worth checking out! The list also includes a highly anticipated new release I have my eye on this holiday season.
Enjoy the list below of what to watch over the holidays and be sure to let me know what you’re most looking forward to seeing!
What to Binge Watch Over the Holidays
A Teacher (FX or HULU)
When I first learned about A Teacher (Trailer), I was intrigued because I enjoy Kate Mara’s work so much but also a little bit horrified by the subject matter. The series follows an English teacher (played by Mara) as she embarks on a sexual relationship with one of her students. I was worried the series would glamorize something so awful, but in reality the show does a great job of portraying just how wrong this relationship is while also being incredibly hard to turn away from. I’ve watched this one week by week as new episodes have come out, but it’s definitely a binge-worthy series and with episodes at just 30 minutes, it’s also one you could easily knock out in a day. It’s a ride. It’s a RIDE!!!
Defending Jacob (Apple TV+)
This eight-episode family drama stars Michelle Dockery and Chris Evans as loving parents whose entire world blows up when their 14-year-old son Jacob (Jaeden Martell of It) is charged with murdering a classmate. Their family is swept up in a media frenzy, living under a microscope as reporters stalk their every move and every action or interaction their son Jacob has had is dissected as the state’s prosecution tries to cast him as a killer. I went into Defending Jacob (watch trailer) not expecting much, but was blown away by the performances and how palpable the anguish and agony these parents go through is in trying to defend their son while also learning troubling things about them they never knew.
Murder on Middle Beach (HBO)
If you’re a true crime lover, you absolutely need to checkout the 4-part series Murder on Middle Beach (watch trailer). Following the death of his mother, Madison Hamburg seeks answers and documents his quest to get them. Along the way, he uncovers a number of dark family secrets that are quite shocking and the series goes places you undoubtedly won’t see coming.
The Vow (HBO)
In the event you haven’t seen The Vow (trailer) yet, it is the perfect series to binge watch after Christmas. The six-episode series takes a close look at the NXIVM cult and its founder Keith Raniere, who has just been sentenced to 120 years in prison for sexual trafficking, financial crimes and more. What really struck me about The Vow is what a fantastic job it does at making you see and feel how easily persuaded Raniere’s followers were as they got further and further sucked into his web.
Succession (HBO)
If you haven’t yet watched HBO’s Succession (trailer), I declare it the #1 thing you MUST binge watch over the holidays! In September it won Best Television Drama at the Emmy’s and its third season is currently filming in NYC. Loosely based off the Murdoch family, Succession follows the Roys and the ensuing family drama that occurs surrounding the question of who will be appointed to take over the family firm when their father Logan Roy (played by the talented Brian Cox) steps down. With phenomenal writing and a strong ensemble cast, Succession also does a great job at balancing intense drama with humor. Its two seasons have already made it a landmark show you absolutely must see!!
The Undoing (HBO)
It’s a very very rare thing when a television series is better than the book, but that is absolutely the case with The Undoing. It’s a masterful six-episode whodunnit series that really raises the stakes on the book You Should Have Known with a powerhouse cast of Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant , Lily Rabe, etc. Life on the Upper East Side seems pretty swell for the Fraser family, that is until a woman is murdered and Hugh Grant’s character Jonathan is pegged for the crime. With the world around her imploding, Grace (Kidman) tries to grapple with the reality that her so-called perfect life isn’t so perfect after all. (Watch the trailer.)
Bridgerton (Coming to Netflix on December 25)
As Shonda Rhimes first project for Netflix, Bridgerton is an adaptation of Julia Quinn’s series of romance novels and arrives on Christmas Day! The series follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest of eight siblings who is in need of a husband. Giving off major Jane Austen vibes, Bridgerton looks to have promise of all the entertaining antics we so love from Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility with perhaps a little more bite. The setting and costumes are also rather eye-catching!
