What better way to ring in the New Year than by celebrating the Best Makeup of 2014? If you’ve been reading Dream in Lace throughout the year, many of these will seem like repeats to you as they’ve all appeared in either reviews, monthly favorites or both! What can I say, when it’s good – it’s good!
I was so excited to put this post together and I’m REALLY happy with all of the products I’ve selected. Seriously, they come with my full seal of approval! Of course everyone has different opinions and preferences, but if you’re in the market for any makeup – I suggest you take a serious look at these makeup products!
Here we go! *pops open Champagne!*, my Makeup Favorites of 2014!
Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder
No doubt, my go-to powder through 2014 was Laura Mercier’s invisible setting powder – both the pressed and loose versions. It’s such a fantastic product, I find myself wondering why even bother with anything else? I love the way this sets my foundation and concealer, without taking away from their beautiful finish. It preserves your makeup look, not overpowers it. Laura Mercier’s powder virtually disappears on your face, without a trace. (Outside of the prolonged lifespan of your makeup of course.) It’s a very soft and finely milled powder, that never clumps or cakes up – no matter how much you apply. I use this both for setting foundations and touch ups IF I need it, which I rarely do. The powder sets your makeup so well you can easily jump from day to night without a thought about your makeup. My kind of product!
Givenchy ‘Rose Boudoir’ Le Rouge Lipstick
I love lip products. But, when it comes to those who get to live in my purse my options are quite refined. I limit myself to two lip products that go with my everywhere, and Givenchy lipstick makes the cut. I think that alone speaks volumes but in case you need persuaded, Givenchy’s Rose Boudoir is that perfect lipstick that goes with literally everything! It’s got more kick to it than your average ‘my lips but better’ shades, while still being neutral enough to match whatever you’ve got going on. The formula is extremely rich/creamy and applies very smoothly. I dare you to try this and not fall in love. Dare you!
The Body Shop Honey Bronzer
In case you’ve missed the memo: The Body Shop‘s Honey Bronzer is incredible. It’s an unsuspecting place to locate a dream makeup product, but low and behold they’ve done it. I have the shade ‘Deep Bronze’ which gives a very natural ‘glow’. Usually I stray away from anything ‘deep’ when it comes to cheek products, but the Honey Bronzer is a very wearable shade that would flatter basically anyone. The shades in general are more on the light side, which means you don’t have to live in fear of looking overdone or *gasp* ‘dirty’ like you might with other bronzers. Instead of wearing a huge, unwanted streak across your face – The Body Shop serves up skin that looks perfectly sun-touched, not a Kardashian.
Maybelline ‘Captivating Carnation’ Lip Elixir
Lip Product #2 that Lives in My Purse: Maybelline‘s moisturizing Lip Elixir in Captivating Carnation. The Elixirs were released right around the start of 2014 and stayed a favorite through the year. On those days when you end up having to apply your lip product on-the-go without a mirror, this came in perfectly. Two easy swipes of my Carnation gloss on the footed applicator and I was done! This lip elixir is so easy I found myself reaching for it over lip products I intended to wear without even thinking. You know it’s good when a product finds its way on your lips without thought 😉
Smashbox ‘Cherry Smoke’ Eye Shadow Palette
2014 was a BIG year for eye shadow palettes. It seemed like every week a new ‘it’ palette was launched that all the beauty editors and bloggers were losing their minds over. Well, somehow I managed to keep my cool about eyeshadow – until I saw a preview of Smashbox‘s Cherry Smoke palette and become a literal mad woman chasing it down. Fortunately it only took 2 stops before I found it at a local Ulta and it was immediate love! The colors are beautiful for the autumn and winter months, pigmented and blend smoothly. I’ve written a full review (here) on this palette and raved about it in favorites, tutorials, etc. – so…I’ll stop here saying: I love it!
Maybelline ‘Barely Branded’ Color Tattoo
When it comes to cream eyeshadow bases, there’s no need to leave your local drugstore! Maybelline‘s 24H Color Tattoos are smooth, consistent, last a long time and really put a stop to creasing. My only fault with these is that Maybelline releases shades and then quickly takes them away. Stop that Maybelline, seriously! My favorite of 2014 was Barely Branded of the metal collection. Although, I wouldn’t describe this as a ‘metal’ finish. It’s a smooth satin finish that is beautiful on its own, or worn as a base. Love!
Stila Stay-All-Day Liquid Eye Liner
A good liquid eyeliner is an absolutely must in any girl’s makeup bag – and there’s definitely no shortage of options out there! When it came to my most-loved of the year though, it was an easy choice. Stila ‘Stay-All-Day’ products in general are fab and dependable, and the liquid liner pen is no exception. It has a very fine nib that makes it simple to draw a precise line and/or flick. It’s also very long-lasting, while still being easy to remove. Most waterproof liners require a lot of work at to get off, leaving my eyes feeling irritated. Not here though! Stila’s liquid eyeliner stays put until you ask it to leave, then it washes away nicely.
Estee Lauder BB ‘Brush on Glow’ Highlighter
Another beauty label you can always depend on is anything ‘Double Wear‘ from Estee Lauder. Highlighting pens were very big in 2013, and that only continued in 2014! My favorite? Estee Lauder’s beautiful Double Wear Brush on Glow pen. This brightening concealer is very smooth and moisturizing. It awakens and nourishes that baggy under-eye area at the same time. There’s also a fantastic selection of shades to help you, no matter what your skin tone.
Marc Jacobs ‘Lunatic’ Highliner Gel Crayon
One of my very favorite discoveries of 2014 is Marc Jacobs’ Highliner Gel Eye Crayons! The shade (Brown)Out is maybe my favorite brown liner of all time – and this gorgeous shade Lunatic is a beautiful hazy violet shade that is really gorgeous worn on your lower lashline with a purple or smokey eye. If you haven’t yet discovered these, you are missing out. They’re super pigmented and glide on so easily! Then, once they’re set – they stay put. Don’t trust me? Put it to the test. Swatch away at your local Sephora and I bet this guy will still be there a couple DAYS later. Marc Jacobs really got it right with these!
Stila ‘Gerbera’ Convertible Blush
2014 wasn’t a big year in Blush for me. When I look at my stash I notice only a few new additions to the mix this year. What I did pick up is a beautiful cream blush from Stila in a peachy-shade called ‘Gerbera’. It is a ‘convertible’ blush – but honestly, I don’t understand the want to use the same product of your cheeks on your lips. I’d never use this as a lipstick…but as a blush, it’s beautiful. It really warms up my face nicely and is such a universally great color on me that it works in every season. It also stays in place very nicely!
L’Oreal Butterfly Mascara
One of my favorite releases of 2014 is hands down L’Oreal‘s Butterfly Mascara! I couldn’t get enough of this little wonder all year long – and I actually am on my third tube, which really says a lot. If you haven’t yet used this, you’re in for a real treat. The applicator is a flexible brush, that basically combs through your lashes widening and lengthening them just as beautiful as my other favorite YSL‘s Baby Doll Mascara – for a fraction of the price.
Estee Lauder Perfectionist Foundation
Over the summer I wore L’Oreal’s Magic Nude Foundation literally every day, making it a near shoe-in for my favorite foundation of the year. What stopped me from including it was that it isn’t something I’d wear in every season, unlike Estee Lauder’s new Perfectionist Foundation that is SO fantastic! I have a full review (here) on this foundation, which goes into more detail about my love affair – but if you’re on the lookout for a new ‘perfect skin in a bottle’ product, here you go! Also, it does have Estee Lauder’s FAMOUS Advanced Night Repair serum injected in it, so it’s a multi-use product. Bonus!
What tops your 2014 makeup list?
