Morning dreamers! Today we’re going to sidestep the Spring 2015 Collections coverage to talk about makeup. Makeup is essential, after all! Recently an email arrived in my inbox from Born Pretty, and I was immediately drawn in by the name. You know, because I was obviously born pretty 😉
They offered to send me a couple items for review, and as a makeup junkie I jumped at the chance. Immediately I got excited browsing their site because I discovered a selection of basically everything! Their inventory is so large, from makeup to brushes to fashion, that you could literally get lost for days trying to take it all in. I told myself for the benefit of you guys – I’d pick some eye shadow and lipstick, i.e. two big areas of interest. You won’t believe how reasonably priced everything is. While I’m not positive, I’d say the site features all items from China – and that means majorly affordable stuff. Being pretty wise to the quality of similarly priced brands available in the US (Elf, Wet n’Wild, Essence, etc.) I was excited to see how these items measured up in comparison.
First item I picked up is an 8-shadow palette from the brand Love Alpha. This Summer Gradually Compact, as they call it, featured a really nice selection of colors that would work in the summer – but also year-round. Neutrals and purples, basically all anyone would need (as far as I’m concerned). Upon receiving the shadow I was immediately impressed with how soft these are! Their texture actually reminds me of Lorac shadows, which is insane considering a Pro Palette will run you about 8 times as much.
I was a tad nervous about the level of shimmer in these shadows – but in the end fell a bit in love with them because of how metallic they are, especially when used wet. I tried these both on their own, paired with other shadows, and just using one at a time. I definitely think they are difficult when you mix these into a look without adding a stabilizing matte shadow. So, I used these in coordination with other matte shadows for the best results. They are also fantastic to wear using one shadow at a time! When used wet, they create such a great metallic finish that you can build up a really nice metallic eye for a night-out.
Application-wise, when used dry I found these actually best applied with my fingers. Somehow the warmth of your finger really picks up the product well, for better results, than when using a brush. So I’d build up the shadows with my finger and then blend with a blending brush for best results.
Now, I know you want to know more about the lipstick. Because – WE ALL LOVE LIPSTICK right?
The lipstick I chose was the Matte Velvet Waterproof Long-Lasting Lipstick, which is certainly a lot of claims for a lipstick that rings it at only $7.63. And yet, somehow it actually measured up! It really surprised me how I threw this on, went about my day eating and drinking, and it still stayed on my lips. It isn’t quite as ‘matte’ as I would say it is ‘velvet’. And, unlike many matte lipsticks, it applied smoothly without dragging nastily along my lip, clinging to dry patches. (Which my Riri Woo from MAC has seriously started to do which seriously annoys me…btw..)
Overall, I’m really kind of excited about discovering BornPretty. In my experience international shipments have taken AGES, but this showed up at my doorstep after about 5 or 6 days, which felt like a miracle. Another cool thing I noticed browsing the site is that they have a lot of knockoffs of higher end makeup. Such as quads from Estee Lauder or Dior, you can find similar items at a dramatically lower price. And when I say dramatically, I mean DRAMATICALLY!
One final cool thing is that Born Pretty wants to save you 10%! If you’re interested in giving anything a try, use the promo code: KELH10 to save you some extra money. And, puh-lease, if you do try something let me know what you got and how you like it. Any suggestions on good things to narrow in on for myself would be greatly appreciated!
I think we can all use a cheap makeup hookup! Oh sure, high end makeup is really a lot of fun – but sometimes we want to save our pennies and get something affordable. Happy to have just another resource for go-to cheap makeup in a flash!
That’s it, I swear I’m done babbling! Everyone have a fantastic week. Have anything special happening this week? Let me know!
