With the harshest winter in years and record low temperatures, my skin has definitely taken a beating through the polar vortex and I’ve had to overhaul my skincare to an ‘I mean business’ sort of attitude. That means my favorite creams and lotions have been kicked to the side in favor of heavy duty moisturizers. Goodbye Laura Mercier Silk Body Creme and hello Lubridem Advanced Therapy. So long Bath & Body Works and come on in Aveeno and Eucerin.
My skin is so dry this winter, at times I take literal baths in lotion to survive the night. The status quo products just won’t cut it this year and so I thought it was high time I share my winter survival products on how I’m inching along this winter with moisturized skin. Here are my Winter 2014 Skincare Essentials!
Argan Magic Hydrating Body Lotion
I use this lotion in the morning! This is something I picked up as soon as I realized my usual Philosophy body lotion just wasn’t going to cut it. So I eliminated the fancy and went for pure moisturizing properties. I like this for daytime, because it is lightweight and non-greasy under your clothes – but still extremely moisturizing. I found this huge bottle at Marshalls for only $9.99 so I suggest looking for it there, or at a TJ Maxx.
Earth Theraputics Intensive Heel Repair
Your feet need love too! I use some form of lotion on my feet every night. After my evening bath or shower, I heavily lotion up and throw on a pair of socks. This is my favorite product to reach for because it’s not only moisturizing, but very fragrant. It’s from Earth Theraputics, who specialize in aromatherapy….and to fend off the winter blues, every little bit helps.
Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion
At night time, I go for heavy-weight moisturizing and that means bringing in the Lubridem Advanced Therapy. This is the big guns when it comes to battling dry skin. Sure, it doesn’t smell fancy and isn’t luxurious, blah blah…but when it comes to fending off dry skin, WHO CARES?! This stuff is phenomenal and every night I take a ‘bath’ in it, and so far…I’ve yet to have one day of ‘itchy dry skin’. This stuff works!
Eucerin Eczema Relief Instant Therapy Creme
I really need to do a full blogpost on this gem. It’s the first drugstore product effective in treating eczema. I suffer from chronic eczema in my ears. Gross confession, I know. So far, the only thing that’s helped treat this pesky problem is prescription strength – that is till now. The smallest bit of this goes a long way! If you struggle with eczema anywhere on your body, this is a must have. It’s the best product I’ve found so far in 2014. Period. Truly a game-changer.
Origins Drink Up-Intensive Overnight Mask
This baby is a definite must-have for this harsh winter. My skin wouldn’t be surviving without it. You apply this at night and allow your skin to ‘drink it up’ while you’re sleeping. In the morning my skin is moisturized, replenished and plumped. They recommend using this 1-2 times a week, but I’ve found myself reaching for this up to 4 times a week because it is truly the most vital step in keeping my skin from dying. The rest of the year, that would definitely be too much. Polar vortex season is definitely another story though 😉
In the winter, we should all step up our game when it comes to handwashing. While living in fear of germs, however, I am putting my hands in harms way, because of this I’m looking to also stock up on some Hand Sanitizer to make sure my hands won’t have any germs left on them that could cause me serious health implications. After each washing, my hands feel extremely dry and so I keep this stuff on hand everywhere! It’s at my desk, in my purse, on my bedside stand and in the car. All day long I’m applying this stuff and so far, it’s done a superb job of keeping my hands as moist as possible.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
Most of the time, I like a lighter formula for a daytime moisturizer because I don’t like to apply a heavy product, then a primer. It’s all too much. That is until the polar vortex and suddenly I needed to rethink my morning routine. Enter Kiehl’s. Not going to lie, the term Ultra is what drew me to this product, as in I was in dire need of Ultra moisturizing power! This certainly does the job, I use it with the toner in the morning – let soak in and then continue with my makeup routine.
Philosophy Hope in a Jar Night Cream
I use this year-round, but have never fully appreciated its powerful moisturizing properties till now! I also use this with the Kiehl’s toner at night and the two work together beautifully. The Hope in a Jar day cream is a lighter, whipped formula. This is very intense and thick. Perfect for subzero temperatures!
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner
As stated, I use this twice a day. One thing I like about Kiehl’s is the size options. This costs only $8 with a larger size available for $16. I like that you can try a product before committing to the full size–and I already have one on hand as backup. This toner is definitely very hydrating and replenishes any moisture you strip from you skin while cleansing.
Philosophy Kiss Me Lip Shine
I always enjoy a Philosophy lip gloss, but never have I known how truly powerful these are until this winter when I’ve had to fend of seriously chapped lips. Using moisturizing lipsticks and balms just weren’t enough. I love this because it not only moisturizes, but stays put on your lips for quite some time – almost like a shield against the elements! They also taste fantastic 🙂
