In Alexander Wang‘s world of Balenciaga, the brand is definitely speeding off in a new direction at warped speed – and yet the essence of the cool Balenciaga silhouette remains intact. Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2014 was presented this week in a presentation of another dimension, literally, with Wang’s modern footprint stamped all over it. These are 3-dimensional clothes, displayed at all angles. Where there were mirrors on the Spring 2014 runway, there are now reflected images of the clothes. It’s attention to detail at its finest. And the clothes are young, clean, short, crisp, minimal and…cool. Yes, cool. If there’s anyone who can do ‘cool’, it’s Alexander Wang…and it’s a beautiful thing to see him bringing Balenciaga along for the ride.
This collection reaffirms my belief that change is good. In fact, change is very good.
When you look at the lines of this pre-fall 2014 collection, you can’t help but notice the aerodynamics of each piece. Standout looks include a double breasted vest and jacket with rounded hemlines and an interesting back that hangs out smoothly. It’s a sleek new interpretation on a standard classic.
Wang carefully acknowledges the oversized silhouette, a Balenciaga signature. Coats, jackets, shirts and vests alike all enclose the models. It’s this footprint of Balenciaga past that proves this is still Balenciaga, just with a new twist. Don’t break the mold – reinvent it.
It’s a new era. One that’s equal parts invention and polish.
