I wasn’t going to even share what was in my final Birchbox as it’s really awful. I cancelled the subscription sample service this month, clearly after the deadline and I received one more box of ‘goodies’. But, I decided this could be a great advert of why you should not waste your $10 on Birchbox and decided to offer it up for you all to see.
So here are the dismal items I received this month.
Beauty Protector Product & Condition Shampoo (2)
I received two of these shampoo samples. I don’t know why, maybe I’m alone here, but I’m not looking for shampoo samples. Shampoo is something I don’t think you really want little samples of to try out. For hair products, you’re much more interested in styling products and masks than shampoo samples. So I was pretty disappointed to receive two of these. One would’ve been bad enough, but two? Thanks Birchbox. You are officially on the level of Motel 6 now to me. Did you have a mini soap to send me too?
I subscribe to a surplus of magazines that provide foil packet samples for free. So to receive foil packets for $10 is a really big slap in the face. I know $10 is not very much money, but when you think about the other sample services for the same value that provide you with often full sized products (i.e. Ipsy who has NEVER sent me a foil packet) it is just like…really? Seriously?
Mereadesso All-In-One Moisturizer:
Another foil packet. Thanks. This one at least does have a decent amount of product. I think I’ll take this on an over-nighter somewhere when I don’t want to bring a full sized moisturizer.
Ruffian Nail Lacquer in Hedge Fund:
I do actually like this and did try it. The formula is pretty rich and creamy and the army green is very on trend right now for fall. So, basically I paid $10 for a mini nail polish. But yea. This is a nice brand and I like it.
So obviously I loathe Birchbox. If you are subscribed to them I really urge you to cancel your subscription and pick up a subscription to Ipsy instead. You will receive a monthly bag of mostly full sized products there that you can actually use. It’s nice to know you’re actually getting something for your $10 where at Birchbox I feel I’m just getting a bunch of crap really. Other than the nail polish my box is going in the garbage which is a waste of money and bad for the environment.
But not so this is post is totally negative…here are some great beauty and fashion items for $10 or less that you can buy with the money you’re saving by NOT having a Birchbox subscription 🙂
5 things you can buy for $10 instead of Birchbox:
1. An Ipsy subscription. That’s my biggest recommendation honestly because it is nice to try out new brands.
2. Philosophy Kiss Me Lip Gloss: ($10)
These are my favorite lip glosses. They taste amazing and really do moisturize your lips. Since we’re heading into the fall and winter where your lips are more likely to get chapped, get one of these. Or several. I keep one by my bed and one in my purse at all times
3. Revlon Lipstick in Plum Velour: ($7.99)
It’s fall now, and that means time to bring out the plum lipstick. Revlon lipsticks are great and less than $10. This is a gorgeous deep plum that’s perfect for fall. Bold lipsticks are actually very flattering. They give you an instant look of glam and draw the attention away from something maybe you don’t want to focus on (a blemish perhaps?). So I really suggest trying them out if you’re a little shy.
4. Maybelline Eye Color Tattoos in Pomegranate Punk: ($6.99)
These babies are basically dupes for the amazing MAC Paint Pots. They are advertised to last 24 hours, and while I haven’t worn them for that long, I can attest that they do last a very long time. This pomegranate punk shade is beautiful for fall and winter. These you can wear alone or pair with regular shadow. Definitely recommend these and they come in a wide range of colors that are all beautiful.
5. Tresemme Volumizing Dry Shampoo: ($4.79)
I cannot express how much I love this dry shampoo. I have tried a ton of dry shampoos, both cheap and expensive, and this is the best one I’ve found. I have pretty oily hair in the front of my scalp, so dry shampoo is a must for me for 2nd day, or 3rd if I’m feeling rushed, day hair. This stuff is AWESOME. It doesn’t give that white powdering finish you get with many dry shampoos, doesn’t make your hair wet…it just really pumps up your hair and cleans it. It’s like a miracle in a can and for under $10 you could actually get 2 of these. You’ll get way more use out of this than a silly Birchbox
And that’s my final sales pitch to cancel your Birchbox subscription. Do you like it? Let me know if you do and why you think it’s better than Ipsy or any of these above products, or anything else you can buy with $10. I haven’t found anyone yet that really likes the service so if you do let me know.
Also, what are your suggestions for great things under $10? It’s always nice to know that there are really great beauty products out there that you can get for cheap. Nail polish is obviously one I didn’t touch on here that I really love. Most drugstore products are under $10 and there are tons of great options there. You don’t have to break the bank to get a good product guys!
