Ralph Lauren is a fixture of classic American fashion, so of course no New York Fashion Week would be complete without their latest collection. Their Spring 2014 collection filled the runway with classic designs that spread across every color of the rainbow. Reinventing the all-American girl, it is a collection that rejuvenates the brand to heights it hasn’t been in a while. It’s great to see Ralph Lauren back on top with a strong collection that will suit the 90s girl within us all.
From the first model strutting down the runway, my mind screamed Clueless! Many many hours were spent rewatching the teen angst of Cher and Dion in the classic romantic comedy in the 90s. All throughout Clueless, characters raced around in knee-highs and modeling their style, I consequently did as well. The preppy-it girl was a look on everyone’s radar and I’m thrilled to see Ralph Lauren reignite this trend. Everything’s more fun in knee-highs!
Black and white came in stripes, florals, and geometric prints: all with clean lines, in mod-looks Twiggy would be proud to wear. Rounding out this clean-cut look is soft make up and fresh washed and straightened hair that is smooth, shiny, and enviable.
Color played a large role in this collection. Solid-citrus brightened up the runway in simple dresses with matching shoes and bags, and in skirt and jacket sets that were also popular in the 90s. I love seeing such a classic look in such vibrant colors.
Crisp white also stood its ground in the spring line, a traditional for Ralph Lauren. But it also was reinvented with leather jackets and architectural skirts. I loved how varied hair and skin tones wore this color because white is universally great on everyone and we mustn’t forget it. Though while very classic, white is somehow much more interesting than a solid black number. I loved all the white looks this NYFW and these by Ralph Lauren are only a few select favorites.
Of course no Ralph Lauren show would be complete without some gowns, and these bright warm colors are perfect for any spring or summer event. They actually have me longing for spring and summer to start all over again, as I stare at plums and browns with a frown.
The final look, in this gorgeous cherry red, is a grand finale to this electric collection. Who doesn’t appreciate a good cape when they see one? I seriously hope to see this on one of the upcoming red carpet events of awards seasons because it is so eye-catching while remaining classic.
Ralph Lauren stays true to what they do best, classic clothes that will never go out of style. But just when you think they’ve become a tad predictable, they pull out a bright color palette that kicks the arse of the pastels and nudes of many other NYFW collections. I really am excited about these colors…and of course, the knee highs.
