I rarely like a Marchesa collection. I’ll be honest about that. For the most part I feel they staple tulle to the dress and call it finished. They design gowns I think look unpolished and unfinished, so imagine my surprise when they debuted their Fall 2013 collection and I really liked it, mostly anyway. So I thought ‘Yay, they’re turning things around!’ and was legitimately excited for their Spring collection at New York Fashion Week.
I saw the above on Instagram and got very excited to see the full collection. I truly L-O-V-E that dress. It’s a beautiful pearl gown that throws back straight to the 1920s where everything was glamour.
I also love the romance of the above gowns, in an effortless way. Marchesa pulled in the craziness and pulled off really beautiful works of art. The blue is soft but doesn’t wash out the models. The designs are unique. The materials and the craftsmanship look expensive. They also had a similar range of gowns in a softer beige.
(You knew there was a but in here right?)
Can you believe these are made by the same women? Hard to believe right? Also hard to believe anyone would call these gowns are gorgeous. The Left looks like a gothic prom dress form the 80s and the center and right look like saloon pajamas that somehow got stuck in a paper shredder.
The above left looks like the poor model was tarred and feathered once she freed herself from the shredder and the left looks absolutely like a nightie, albeit a fancy nightie. The center I originally had marked to go in the looks I liked but the more I studied it the more I realized it was just Lindsey Wixson who I like and the flowers took on the shape more and more of skulls to me. It is also the standard Marchesa tulle (do they sell that stuff at Costco now?) that I so protest about the brand.
The above left is probably the worst of the entire collection, and probably of all New York Fashion Week. Then there’s the poor model on the left who has an expression on her face that screams, ‘How the hell did I get stuck as the human cotton ball?’
So..I think I’m let down by this collection even more than usual because until their Fall 2013 collection, I was pretty resigned in not liking the Marchesa collection at NYFW. I came to terms with it…and this just seems like a major belly flop. Perhaps they had bottled up crazy they had to release because I find this to be their absolute worst collection to date.
