The 2016 Governors Awards were held over the weekend, marking a triumphant start to awards season! Let’s review the red carpet.
Good news: award season is on the way! *takes a moment of pause for celebration*
Over the weekend, the 2016 Governors Awards took place and Hollywood’s elite really brought it when it came time to step out onto the red carpet. The annual Governors Awards are often seen as the true start of award season, and I know that is music to your ears about now. I know I’m not the only one in desperate need of a pretty distraction, right?
From young starlets like Emma Stone and Lily Collins, to Hollywood heavy weights like Nicole Kidman and Helen Mirren – it was undoubtedly a star-studded occasion. The event was also a great preview of good things to come on the red carpet as we make our way through awards season. The return of Michelle Williams alone is enough to throw confetti over, right?
From Elie Saab, to Miu Miu, Prada and even Amanda Wakeley, the red carpet featured a nice selection of designers with no one pulling out as a front-runner. I am slightly surprised we didn’t see any Valentino, though.
In my excitement of having an awards red carpet to discuss, I’ve rounded up what the ladies wore on the 2016 Governors Awards red carpet. Let’s huddle together, take a moment to relax and review the beauty.
Amy Adams in Carolina Herrera
Amy Adams is the gift that keeps on giving. Gold, sparkling polka dots? YES, PLEASE!
Emma Stone in Erdem
Also, praise Emma Stone returning to awards season for La La Land. I love absolutely everything about this look, straight down to the bows at her ankles.
Felicity Jones in Miu Miu
Nice. Safe. Maybe a bit boring.
Gugu Mbatha Raw in Narciso-Rodriguez
Gugu’s dress is a nice break to the gold-streak we see so much of these days. Shimmering silver is nice too, ya know?
Hailee Steinfeld in Elie Saab
Hailee is turning up on the red carpets in promotion for her new film Edge of 17, which I believe opens on Friday. She’s always hit and miss on the red carpet, but I can safely say at the 2016 Governors Awards: she was a total hit.
My queen. (One of, anyway.)
Kate Beckinsale in Pamella Roland
The neckline reminds me of that old fashioned candy with colored sugar dots on white paper. Not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, but the gown is also quite bridal…
Lily Collins in Amanda Wakeley
I love Lily and am relieved to see her on the red carpet more. The richness of the gown is divine, but something about her hair is throwing me off. It seems childish in a way, which is totally silly when you look at how NOT childish it is styled…and yet, I dunno.
Lupita Nyong’o in Elie Saab
Seems like a lazy day for Lupita. Perhaps she’s got post-election exhaustion like the rest of us.
Marion Cottilard in Dior
Some say this Dior is a bit witchy, I say it’s fabulous.
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
Hands down, my pick for best dressed of the night. Everything about this is a YES!
Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
I adore this woman. I adore her sparkling attitude and I adore her matching clutch.
Rebecca Hall in Prada
Rebecca Hall seems to be one-to-watch this awards season. She’s been making interesting fashion choices and this Prada is certainly off the beaten path. I’m not so keen on the fit across the bust line, but the overall design is nice.
Ruth Negga in Gucci
Because we all needed another reminder to watch out for snakes. They’re everywhere, I’m telling you!
Guys, I’m getting really excited for awards season. If you haven’t yet, definitely mark your calendars for January 7th, because that’s when the Golden Globes are and you just KNOW it’s going to be brilliant. I know all of us are feeling low right now, but at the very least…we can distract ourselves with pretty dresses on pretty ladies. Even better, we can enjoy pretty dresses on pretty ladies while sipping on a cocktail.
If you’re dying for more awards red carpets, the American Music Awards are coming this Sunday, November 20th! I’ll of course be live-tweeting (and snarking) the red carpet and awards ceremony. It’s going to be a good one.
As always, stay stylish and keep chasing your dreams!
