Straight off the runway: 5 fall hairstyles to have you feeling stylish all season long.
Look, I love summer…but let’s be honest: it’s not the best season for hair. In fact, it’s probably the worst.
Unless you’re lounging by the pool or beach all day, the heat and humidity really take a beating on your locks. So when fall comes around, I am always excited to start thinking more about what my hair will look like once the humidity has passed and stopped undermining the time and effort I put into creating a style.
The fall runways are always a good source for inspiration and the Fall 2013 season featured a variety of winners. Lucky for us all, these fall hairstyles are also surprisingly easy to pull off. That means there’s no need to scramble in the morning to get your hair done on time. Win, win!
My 5 Favorite Fall Hairstyles!
Fall Hairstyle #1: Sleeked Back
Models graced the runway of Balmain‘s Fall 2013 RTW Collection wearing overstated clothes and accessories…and understated hair and makeup.
Of particular interest was this simple sleek look, leaving your hair with the fresh from the shower look. What’s great about this style is it can be worn by most hair types and all hair lengths. So dust off your hair gel and give this a try for work, school or just for a day of errands.
To style, start by partly air or blow drying your hair. Then, apply hair gel to a brush or comb and brush from your roots backward to create a wet look that will last all day.
Fall Hairstyle #2: Romantic Abbey
- While blow driving, use a round brush to create volume and curl at your roots
- Grab a curling iron to brush the ends – rolling up only part way.
- With your hair gripped in the curling iron, hold for a solid 7-10 seconds.
- Release the curling iron but hold your hair in place with your hand for about 6 seconds before letting go.
- Spray to hold the curl in place.
Fall Hairstyle #3: Braid It Out
One style you don’t have to kick to the curb at the end of summer is the side bride.
As seen at Valentino, this voluminous braid is perfect to put together in a moment’s notice but maintains a chic look. Each model also sported a center part which is a subtle, but effective change from the most common side part. Another way to dress up a simple braid is to play with accessories. Models of Valentino wore headbands but some other great options would be scarves or ribbon.
H&M makes a basic black headband, similar to the one pictured here. But you could also have a bit of fun and try something with some more edge. This would be a particularly great look for day old hair. And who doesn’t love an excuse to hit the snooze button in the morning?
Fall Hairstyle #4: A Royal Chignon
No, I’m not suggesting everyone going around wearing a gold crown. (Although that would be fabulous!)
Seen at Dolce and Gabbana were these amazing, elegant chignons. The top knot owns hair for summer, but for fall take a different approach and try this low bun.
A trick to make this look even easier would be to use a hair ring. If you’re not familiar, that is a brillo-y round ring that can roll up your hair into buns like this one. Just play around with pulling out wisps here and there, and of course back comb your crown for more volume.
While you don’t have to invest in a gold crown or tiara, you could play around with different hair accessories such as ribbon or nice sparkle-y barrettes. H&M makes a floral headband I think would be really gorgeous with this style as well.
Fall Hairstyle #5: Au Naturel!
I’ve been known to occasionally press the snooze button, (okay, more than occasionally) and it’s nice to have the fall back option of wearing your hair as it naturally styles.
3.1 Phillip Lim‘s runways were full of natural locks. And what is simpler than doing nothing at all?
To create this style, wash your hair and allow it to air dry…creating natural waves. If you’re feeling up to it, you can also add a curling gel to your damp hair to enhance its natural curling abilities.
Are you the plan ahead type? Braiding your hair the night also makes for easy waves that will make getting ready in the morning super easy!
|Marni Fall 2013 Couture|
Even simpler than fresh-washed, air-dried hair though, would be the au natural bed head look in the Marni Fall 2013 Couture shoot. It’s nice to know that messy (and possibly greasy) hair can be chic.
Roll out of bed, throw on a headband or scarf and you can safely rush out the door. Voila!
